Stills from The Pretender

In 2015, the hit drama "The Pretender" let us know the mercurial Mingtai, the tenacious and indomitable Yu Manli, the outer soft and inner Mirror, and the Ming Lou with multiple disguises. The Ming Lou in the play has a triple identity, and the prototype of the Ming Lou, Yuan Shu, has a five-fold identity in history, which can be described as a hard-core youth.

Yuan Shu, real name Yuan Xueyi, born in 1911, a native of Puchun, Hubei Province. His father, Yuan Xiaolan, was a member of the Old League and later served in the National Government, and his mother, Jia Renhui, was born into the family of jujia, a former Qing salt official. At the age of 5, he went to a private school, and at the age of 8, his family moved to Shanghai, which should have been a happy and happy family, but unfortunately his father had a bad character, and he actually had a relationship with the students he taught, abandoning Yuan Shu's mother and son, and what is even more repugnant is that when Jia Renhui was cornered, Yuan Xiaolan did not give help.

The misfortune of childhood, from an early age and his mother for their lives, Yuan Xueyi's stubborn character that is not willing to be mediocre and struggles against fate also comes from his mother.

In 1925, the May Thirtieth Movement broke out in Shanghai, and Yuan Xueyi, who was only 14 years old, participated in the mass anti-imperialist patriotic movement and changed his name to Yuan Shu. In 1927, Yuan Shu threw himself into the Northern Expedition, which coincided with a coup d'état launched by Mr. Jiang, and many young people were persecuted, and Yuan Shu was extremely disappointed in the Nationalist government. In 1929, he studied in Japan, learned some progressive ideas, and soon after returning to China, he founded the weekly newspaper "Literary and Art News" and served as the editor-in-chief.

In 1931, Yuan Shu took the initiative to express his willingness to join our party and actively participate in the revolution. Pan Hannian not only agreed, but also asked him to participate in assisting the CCP's intelligence work and become a special branch of the Central Committee. As a result, Yuan Shu had to stop publishing "Literary and Art News", gradually fading the color of the left and becoming a "gray little citizen".

Five-fold identity

After more than two months of special training, Yuan Shu mastered the relevant skills of spy work. One day, Yuan Shu asked his cousin Jia Botao, who was serving in the Shanghai Police Command, to contact him to seek a position within the Nationalist government. Jia said that as long as the ancestral calligraphy painting was given to Wu Xingya, this matter would be completed. Sure enough, Wu Xingya got the most precious treasure in the calligraphy and paintings, and immediately agreed to let Yuan Shu join the Central Unification. After that, Yuan Shu carried out spy work for Wu Xingya as a journalist, constantly providing him with intelligence, and gradually, Yuan Shu became a red person around Wu Xingya.

In 1937, Yuan Shu's talent in intelligence work and his early background in studying in Japan. It attracted the attention of Dai Kasa, the head of the military command. Dai Kasa personally visited and hoped that he could work for the military command. Yuan Shu told Pan Hannian about this and, with the approval of the party organization, joined the military command.

In November of the same year, Shanghai fell and the Nationalist government withdrew to Nanjing. Yuan Shu stayed in Shanghai and set up a special operations group to start the rape. At this time, Pan Hannian issued an order to Yuan Shu, asking him to blow up a batch of ammunition transported by the Japanese army to Shanghai. However, how did Yuan Shu know where the arms had gone? This person is Cao Youshan, the big man of the Green Gang. During a covert protection operation, Yuan Shu saved Cao Youshan, who had been assassinated, and became his savior. As a result, Yuan Shu joined the Qinggang organization and became a "Tong" character who could sit on an equal footing with Du Yuesheng and Ji Yunqing. With Cao Youshan's help, Yuan Shu quickly found the place where the arms were placed and blew them up.

In 1933, at a press conference held by the Nanjing government, Yuan Shu took the initiative to talk with Eiichi Iwai as a journalist, and the two had a very pleasant conversation with the experience of studying in Japan. After that, Pan Hannian asked Yuan Shu to continue to keep in touch with Iwai, hoping that he would be able to obtain relevant information from the Japanese side. Yuan Shu won Iwai's appreciation in exchange for major information on the Nationalist government's military expenditure, and the two became friends.

At this point, Yuan Shu already had multiple identities: the Central Special Branch, the Military Command, the Central Command, the Green Gang, and the Japanese Pseudo. He also became the only five-fold spy in the history of Chinese intelligence.

Identity exposure

Just when Yuan Shu's work was like a fish in the water, an accident happened. In August 1935, the Shanghai "Declaration" published "The E-High Court Has Sued the Shanghai Mysterious Westerner Case", and the subtitle was "Yuan Shu Transferred to the E-Provincial Court". It turned out that a strange man was arrested at the Hubei Station of the Military Command, and when he was interrogated, he did not say a word. This Westerner was Walton, the head of the Chinese General Branch of the Communist International, who had been sent to China by the Intelligence Department of the Red Army of the former Soviet Union to take charge of intelligence work in the Far East of the Communist International.

However, Yuan Shu and Walton did not know each other, so how were they implicated? The exposure of Yuan Shu's identity stems from a notebook carried by Westerners. A contact information on the notebook, one link after another, deep exploration, and finally found Yuan Shu. Therefore, the military command agents quickly sent people to arrest Yuan Shu, but the clue was broken, and he had no choice but to close the case, and Yuan Shu was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. When his father, Yuan Xiaolan, learned of this incident, he interceded with Chen Lifu, and because of Chen Lifu's face, Yuan Shu was released on bail after only eight months.

Even after being released on bail, Yuan Shu was deeply disturbed, and his side was full of military agents. In this case, Yuan Shu went to Japan for the purpose of studying, thinking that he could study wholeheartedly in Japan, but unexpectedly, at this time, Iwai Hideichi learned that he was in Japan, asked him out to meet, and tried to win him over. However, Yuan Shu did not forget that he was a Chinese, and in the process of interacting with Iwai, he still did not forget to collect useful intelligence.

Life after returning home is still not peaceful. In the autumn of 1938, Dai Kasa received Yuan Shu alone and told him that after returning to Shanghai, he would try to get rid of Li Shiqun, the head of the secret service who had already defected to the enemy and acted as a traitor. But the sky did not follow people's wishes, and before the plan was implemented, it was betrayed. Yuan Shu was arrested again, and Pan Hannian learned of the news and immediately found Yuan Shu's wife, Ma Jingxing, and asked her to contact Eiichi Iwai in Shanghai. Eiichi Iwai immediately asked to meet Yuan Shu in his capacity as deputy consul general of the Japanese consulate. Li Shiqun could not refuse the Japanese consulate's request, so Iwai met with Yuan Shu. Yuan Shu told him the truth of the matter, and Iwai had to help him get out of his current predicament first, and on the other hand, criticized him for not participating in such dangerous activities.

The intelligence work that Yuan Shu completed during this period can be described as innumerable: providing important intelligence inside the Japanese and the puppets; eradicating traitors; rescuing our captured people; informing the puppet Jiangsu provincial government of its policies and plans... However, this is only a small part of what he has done as a pretender. The life of a legend cannot be shown in a few words. Even if he was regarded as a reactionary, he said categorically: "Even if I am burned to ashes, I am also in my heart to my party." On November 26, 1987, Yuan Shu passed away and died in Beijing at the age of 76.

"Disguise your identity, hide your name, do light and dark things." Yuan Shu gave up his original peaceful life and wandered in the shadow of the sword and light sword. Perhaps people will think that Yuan Shu, who has iq and emotional intelligence, will be as handsome and handsome as the Ming Lou in the play, but people cannot be disguised, and the historical Yuan Shu has a general appearance, a general figure, and even a Yushu Linfeng, but it is such a small citizen who is no one in the vast sea of people, who dedicates everything to the party's revolutionary cause, does not seek returns, and is a well-deserved hero!
