Not long ago, Ying Zi (pseudonym) was born in a hospital in Fuzhou. What surprised the midwife was that Hideko, who had just come into this world, was as pale as paper and had severe suffocation.
After preliminary examination, the doctor found that Hideko suffered from congenital severe anemia, and there was a "fetal mother transfusion" in the fetus, that is, the fetus transfused arterial blood to the mother.
"This resulted in her having far lower haemoglobin and hematocrit after birth than in normal newborns, with only a quarter of her ability to carry oxygen." All the check data means that Hideko is on the verge of death.
Two teams arrived at the rescue
Relying solely on the capacity of the local hospital, it is difficult to save this critically ill child. Therefore, the local hospital contacted the Fujian Provincial Children's Hospital for the first time.
After receiving the news, the neonatal transport team of the Provincial Children's Hospital immediately arrived by car and launched a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan. After a series of rescues in a race against the clock, Hideko's blood pressure gradually rose and her cardiopulmonary function improved, but she still needed to be transferred to the Provincial Children's Hospital for further treatment.
However, Hideko's cardiopulmonary function is currently unable to tolerate a large number of blood transfusions, coupled with her high need for oxygen, may be a slight move, the vital signs will fluctuate.
At this point, only by relying on ECMO can the success of transshipment be ensured. The so-called ECMO is an internationally recognized top first aid technology, known as a "life-saving artifact", and has made many achievements in the treatment of critically ill patients in the new crown epidemic.
At that time, it was late at night, not to mention the time required to assemble the team, debug the equipment, etc., only the implementation of ECMO for newborns during the transfer, there was no precedent in our province before, which increased the uncertainty of treatment, bad news kept coming from the front, Yingzi's blood pressure was still extremely unstable, and there were three cardiac drops in a short period of time.
At this time, there is no room for much thought, the ECMO team in view of the dangerous situation that may occur during the transfer, quickly formulated a plan, gathered cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiopulmonary bypass doctors, monitoring teams, and set off with a full set of equipment.
In less than 20 minutes, the ECMO team arrived, and everyone cooperated with tacit understanding and quickly completed various operations. With the operation of ECMO, Death was successfully repelled, and Hideko's vital signs finally returned to stability.
Subsequently, while ensuring that the power, air supply, monitoring, warmth, and drugs required by ECMO during the transfer were in place, the ECMO team successfully transferred Ying Zi to the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit of Fujian Children's Hospital.
Not long after, Yingzi's anemia and acidosis have been gradually corrected, the hemodynamics are stable, the cerebral protective measures such as sub-hypothermia have also been operated in time, and all indicators have been gradually restored.
And after active treatment, Ying Zi's various indicators have been restored, feeding is normal, cranial imaging, EEG, brain oxygen, cerebral blood flow and other all-round neuro-intensive care measures, so that the child's prognosis also has a solid guarantee, the birth of the dying Ying Zi, has been discharged normally today, back to the arms of his parents.
Add hope to the grassroots critically ill newborns

In the past, many critically ill newborns who were far away from the hospital, such as children with heart and lung failure or respiratory failure, could not be treated well in the local hospital, and there was no condition for transfer, and many doctors and parents may give up rescue.
Now with a mature transfer team and the technical ability to use ECMO in an unfamiliar environment, as long as we contact us in time, we can wait until we get to the local hospital, and there is hope of redemption.
It is understood that the ECMO team led by Secretary Cao Hua of Fujian Children's Hospital has experience in 8 cases of neonatal ECMO before, which is the team with the largest number of neonatal ECMO cases and the highest success rate in the province, and has also created a number of provincial records in the neonatal ECMO project, and the transfer team also has rich experience in transport.
This time, the smooth development of Yingzi's transfer and ECMO treatment marks that the Provincial Children's Hospital has a high level of recovery, rescue and difficult transfer capabilities for critically ill newborns, which undoubtedly adds a life guarantee to the critically ill newborns who need to be transported and treated in the province, and also marks a more solid step forward in the pace of building a national children's regional medical center.
