Yellow Star Locust

Aularches miliaris

Arthropods, Insects, Orthoptera, Locust family, Tsubasa trollae. Also known as the sharp-headed yellow locust, it mostly lives in areas with higher temperatures and warm climates, and is distributed in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan and other provinces and regions. Photo taken in Pu'er.

The yellow star locust is an incompletely metamorphosed insect that goes through three stages of egg, nymph and adult in its lifetime. Among them, nymphs and adults look about the same, the difference is that adults have more wings after feathering, and their body color has also changed. Their mouthparts are chewable mouthparts, which are mainly composed of five main parts: the upper lip, the upper jaw, the lower jaw, the lower lip and the tongue. When nibbling on plants, the upper and lower lips are opened to reveal the upper and lower jaws.

The Yellow Star Locust is the face value of the locust world, and the body color is rich and beautiful. However, the beautiful "outfit" of the yellow locust is not used for "drafting", but a real warning color, through the "gorgeous" body color to warn potential predators "I am poisonous", and then achieve the purpose of self-preservation. However, this was just its bluff, in fact, there was no poison in the Yellow Star Locust's body.

Yellow locust is an agricultural pest that mainly harms maize, rice, sugarcane and grasses, mango, betel nut, coconut, chestnut, casuarina, maple, tung oil, camellia oleifera, star anise, oak, fir, paulownia, pine, fir, eucalyptus, teak, ailanth and other crops, fruit trees and forest trees.

Studies have found that a single locust has a mild temperament, but when the density of locusts in an area reaches a certain level, the locusts collide and rub against each other, prompting individuals to release a "cluster of pheromones" (a chemical secreted by locusts), and when the "cluster pheromones" attract more locusts to gather, the locust plague will break out.

The locust plague has always been one of the most important natural disasters in the world, because of its huge number and destructive power to crops, like the "B17 bomber bomber fleet" during World War II, there is no grass everywhere.

The most recently high-profile desert locust plague began in Africa and swept through the Middle East and South Asia, and the desert locust is also considered one of the most destructive migratory pests in the world, flying 150 kilometers a day with the wind and surviving for about 3 months. Studies have shown that swarms of locusts covering an area of one square kilometer can eat 35,000 people's rations a day.

The main agricultural areas in the north of our country are attacked every year by the East Asian flying locusts. In order to prevent the threat of desert locusts, from the central to the local level, attaches great importance to it, Yunnan alone has set up 110-120 desert locust monitoring points, launched desert locust monitoring, and strictly prevented the invasion, colonization and further spread of desert locusts to other areas of the country.
