Metals suppliers provide Ernie Ball alloys for use in the strings, where the ore is smelted at high temperatures to remove unwanted impurities. The raw material is then cooled and forged into a shape that can be converted into wire. The alloys dedicated to Cobalt Slinky, M-Steel Slinky and Aluminum-Copper strings are smelted to exact specifications set by Ernie Ball to ensure optimal performance and consistent stability.

Ernie Ball's strings are made from the highest quality and latest raw materials, which are subject to tight tolerances to ensure optimal performance and consistency. Each type of string is constructed from a specific combination of wire materials and sizes developed by Ernie Ball.

Carefully manufactured

The end metal rings of guitar and bass strings are made of brass wire. The metal rings of brass are machined and cut to exacting specifications to ensure a precise fit and functionality. The ball end is then deburred, cleaned, and inspected before it is ready for use.

Strings are wound

The unique ratio of the thickness of the core wire to the wrapping layer is used to wrap it. The core wire is made by cutting a hexagonal metal wire into a certain length, and a string ball is joined by twisting one end of the core. The core is then loaded onto a winding machine, which rotates the core while laying an even layer of winding wire around it.

Coated strings are treated using our proprietary nanotechnology. The strings are placed in bundles, loaded into the chamber, the string surface is prepared and treated.

Quality control

All raw materials and strings must pass through a multi-point inspection process. Our strings are repeatedly inspected throughout the manufacturing and packaging process.

Inner packaging

Ernie Ball single strings are individually coiled and packaged according to specific slinky specification requirements. The Slinky set is then processed and wrapped in airtight, individual foil wraps.

Outer protective packaging

The strings are manufactured using Ernie Ball's Element Shield, which is constructed of an impermeable film that is wrapped and sealed in such a way that each set of strings is insulated from the air to avoid moisture and ensure long-term preservation.

Immersion test

Check the seal quality of the packaged strings using a pressurized water chamber that subjectes the package to a higher level of pressure at each seal. This ensures that the package is completely airtight and of the best possible sealing quality.
