Tempelhof Airport Racetrack: From the airport runway to the racing track

Since its debut in 2014/15, Berlin has been the host city for the Formula E races, with a total of 18 races. The Tempelhof Airport Circuit creates a familiar yet demanding atmosphere for drivers and teams, and anything is possible with the track layout update for Season 10.

The track's uneven concrete shoulders, highly degraded tires and high grip on the track make it a unique test of skill and strategy. Despite the challenges, Berlin is set to offer fans some of the most exciting moments and results.

The updated counterclockwise track layout brings some changes, such as the location where Attack Mode is activated is now located on the outside of Turn 2, while the track has been reconfigured to a 15-turn layout with additional corner arcs and a new hairpin corner.

Halfway through the schedule, there are still eight exciting races to go

As Season 10 reaches the halfway point, the second season of the GEN3 era is becoming more and more competitive, with the first eight rounds of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship producing seven different winners, 11 podium-finishers, and the top 10 in the drivers' standings made up of drivers from seven different teams.

As the second half of the season begins, the current drivers' standings are as follows: Pascal Verlein of Porsche Team leads the race – he is currently the only driver to have two wins in Season 10. He was followed by Jaguar's Nick Cassidy, who won one and finished on the podium four times this year, just seven points less than Willein.

Andretti Racing's 2023 World Champion Jack Dennis is currently third in the standings, while Nissan's Oliver Rowland and Jaguar's Mitch Evans are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Maserati's Gunther and DS Penske's Vergne are currently sixth and seventh respectively, with McLaren's Sam Bird eighth. DS Penske's other driver, Van Doorne, finished ninth after his best result of the season in Monaco, while Porsche's Da Costa occupied the final spot in the top ten.

This weekend will also be another interesting chapter in the Season 10 sequence, as a number of new-generation drivers will be representing the team this weekend in place of those who are unable to compete due to conflicts with other races. First up is Envision, where Buyemi and Robin Frings will be given priority to race the six Hours of WEC Spa and Envision has called up two talented young drivers in Berlin – Joel Eriksson and Paul Aron. For Mahindra Racing, the team brought in their development driver and reserve driver, Jordan King, to replace Nick De Vries in the two-round Formula E Berlin race. South Africa's Kelvin van der Linde will replace WEC's Nico Müller at the WEC for the ABT CUPRA team. Finally, McLaren Racing was replaced by McLaren reserve driver Tyler Barnard in the first free practice session of Monaco two weeks ago, when veteran Sam Bird broke his right hand after hitting the wall at Turn 1. This will definitely change the race and bring new life to the track.

FAITH A brilliant record of ten years in Berlin

Berlin Station has held 18 races in the history of Formula E with a total of 7 different track layouts, and the city has witnessed 15 different championships over the years. It is worth noting that four drivers – Sam Bird, Di Grassi and Vilgne – have competed in every Berlin race.

The Tempelhof Airport Circuit has been with Formula E for nine years since its first race, and in 2023/24 it will take on a completely new look. In order to accommodate the increase in the speed of the cars, the Formula E side decided to upgrade the layout of the Berlin circuit. In terms of length, the lap length of the course has been increased from 2.355 km to 2.585 km. The number of corners has also been increased from 10 to 15. The most significant change is the large straight, which has been moved from a location close to the old hangar to an outer straight.

Overall, the new Berlin circuit layout reduces the already compact continuous corners, adds multiple corners, and lengthens the straights. All of these measures will help the faster Gen3 cars to perform at their best, and will also help to increase the number of overtaking points on the track and make the race even more exciting.

The rookie test event is back again

The rookie test will take place on Monday (13 May) after the 2024 Formula E Berlin event. Each of the 11 teams in Formula E will send two drivers to the one-day test. Last month, during the Formula E's Rookie Free Practice in Misano, a number of drivers were given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of GEN3, with McLaren's Tyler Barnard setting the fastest lap.

Since the 2020 rookie test, several rookie test drivers have been promoted to full Formula E drivers, including Jaguar's Nick Cassidy, Nissan's Sasha Fenestraz, McLaren's Jack Hughes, Andrett's Norman Nato, ERT's Kamara and many more, and they are now the hottest stars on the track.

There are a number of familiar names that can be seen in this rookie test, including Marta Garcia, the winner of the inaugural F1 Academy race for ERT Racing, Zane Maloney, the leading driver in the F2 standings this season for Andretti Racing, Frédéric Vestie, the 2023 F2 runner-up for Mahindra Racing, and Filipe Drugovic, the 2022 F2 champion for Maserati Racing.
