Chen Banding (1876~1970), formerly known as Chen Nian, was a painter. A native of Shanyin (now Shaoxing), Zhejiang. Born in a poor family, he studied poetry, calligraphy and painting since he was a child, and worshipped Wu Changshuo as his teacher. After the age of 40, he came to Beijing, first worked in the Beijing Library, and later taught at the Beiping Art College. He is good at flowers, landscapes, calligraphy and seal carving. He used to be the director of the Chinese Artists Association, the vice president of the Beijing Fine Art Academy, and the president of the Chinese Painting Research Association.
