According to people familiar with the matter, German automakers may benefit if Germany convinces the European Union to cancel the proposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. Last week, the European Union announced new tariffs of up to 38.1% on Chinese EV imports, but German officials are figuring out how to make sure the proposal doesn't actually take effect. According to people familiar with the matter, China proposed to reduce import tariffs on large-displacement cars, and in return for abandoning tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, it is currently imposing a 15% tariff on EU passenger car imports; China and the EU have agreed to start consultations on the EU's countervailing duty investigation into electric vehicles.
