Since last year, Okinawa Prefecture, Osaka Prefecture and Tokyo Prefecture in Japan have successively exposed that the content of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water bodies exceeded the standard, and the blood tests of nearby residents were abnormal. Since most of the incident areas are close to US military bases in Japan and Japanese Self-Defense Forces bases, these bases are considered possible sources of pollution.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are difficult to degrade and accumulate in the environment and the human body, and are known as "forever chemicals". Experts point out that long-term consumption of large amounts of water contaminated with such substances may affect reproductive health and children's growth and development, and even cause diseases such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.

As the number of abnormal blood tests among residents continues to increase, many places in Japan have asked the central government to take countermeasures. Japanese media reported on the 24th that the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have launched a nationwide survey of harmful substances in tap water at the end of May, requiring local governments to report the detection of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances contained in about 12,000 tap water by the end of September.

Japan's environment ministry said it required local governments to report information such as whether they had been tested for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in tap water between 2020 and 2024, what the highest concentrations were detected, and the name of the waterworks that had the problem.

For the first time, the Japanese government included smaller waterworks in the survey, requiring relevant authorities to report on the testing of tap water used in universities, hospitals and apartments.

According to Japanese media, the government hopes to grasp the actual pollution of tap water in various places through this survey, so as to determine whether the relevant standards need to be revised and take corresponding countermeasures. At this stage, Japan's tentative national standard for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is 50 nanograms per liter of water.

In March this year, Japan's Ministry of the Environment commissioned three institutions to conduct a study on the effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances on human health. The three institutions, Hokkaido University, Hyogo Medical University, and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical, Food and Hygiene, are expected to take three years to study.
