Elsevier recently officially released the 2020 "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" list, with a total of 4,023 scholars from 373 universities, enterprises and research institutions, covering 10 subject areas and 84 first-level disciplines of the Ministry of Education. Professor Wu Qingyu, Chief Consultant and Director of the Heart Center of Beijing Huaxin Hospital (the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University), was selected again. Previously, Professor Wu Qingyu has been selected into the List of Edsvier's Cited Scholars for six consecutive years.

The list of "China's Highly Cited Scholars" has been released for the seventh time since its debut in 2015 and has been released in 2021, and has received great attention from scholars at home and abroad. The basic data extraction of the highly cited scholars uses the First-level Discipline Classification Mapping of the Ministry of Education of Elsevier, which makes the data of Chinese scholars' subject attribution and discipline performance more intuitively displayed, more in line with the academic research ecology of Chinese discipline settings, and more perfect and scientifically and accurately depicts the scientific research outputs of Chinese scholars, providing effective help for further sorting out and analyzing the performance of Scholars' citations. Compared with previous years, the 2020 list has made more scholars with outstanding performance in the field of segmentation enter everyone's field of vision.

Professor Wu Qingyu has been engaged in clinical and basic research in cardiovascular surgery for more than 40 years, is the main pioneer and discipline leader in the field of cardiac surgery in China, enjoys the special government allowance of the State Council, and is now the first member of the American Society of Thoracic Surgery (AATS), a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the only Member of the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) in China, and an honorary member of the Asian Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (ASCVTS). Member of the Standing Committee of the Asian Representative of the World Society of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WSPCHS), member of the editorial board of the Chinese mainland of the American Yearbook of Thoracic Surgery, member of the Disciplinary Review Group of the Degree Committee of the State Council, and academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. Professor Wu Qingyu has innovatively proposed a new concept of anatomical correction of tricuspid valve downshift (Ebstein deformity) internationally, so that more than 98% of patients with the disease are exempted from artificial valve replacement. The paper, published in the Yearbook of Thoracic Surgery in the United States, was recognized by Professor Roger B.B. Mee, Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Cleveland Medical Center, the most prestigious international expert in the treatment of pediatric congenital heart disease, as a major advance in the treatment of Ebstein deformity. In 2004, the surgical team led by Professor Joseph A. Dearani, a well-known cardiac surgery expert at the Mayo Clinic, went to the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University to learn this technology. So far, Professor Wu Qingyu is the cardiovascular surgery expert with the largest number and best efficacy in the treatment of Ebstein deformity patients in the world.

He developed the technical standards for radical surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot and was written into the textbook of cardiovascular surgery. This standard expands the surgical indications for the disease, so that the surgical mortality rate has been reduced from about 10% to less than 0.8%, and has maintained it to this day, reaching the international leading level. The related paper was published in the American "Thoracic Surgery Yearbook", and Professor C.W. Lillehei, one of the founders of the world's cardiac surgery and the first in the world to implement tetralogy radical resection of Fallot," formally evaluated in a specially invited review: the conclusions reached were correct, and the surgical results were the best in the English literature. He took the lead in carrying out complex heart surgery for newborns in China, and performed aortic artery transfer surgery for children born only 2, 5, 11 and 26 hours after birth, all of which were successful, rewriting the history of inability to treat such diseases in China, and turning aortic transfer surgery into routine surgery.

He took the lead in solving the key technical problems of coronary artery bypass surgery in China and promoted it. In 2000, he broadcast the entire process of coronary artery bypass surgery online for the first time to the world. He personally treated more than 3,500 cases of difficult and complex critical coronary heart disease patients, and the success rate of coronary artery bypass surgery was more than 99.5%. As the first person to complete it, the "Clinical and Basic Research on Improving the Therapeutic Effect of Coronary Heart Disease Surgery" that he was responsible for won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2002 issued by the State Council. He has trained a large number of technical backbones, so that more than 100 hospitals across the country can complete this kind of surgery, through the "Tenth Five-Year" research, the mortality rate of more than 5,000 cases of coronary artery bypass surgery in the country has been reduced to 1.7%, which is at the international leading level.
