The direction of the Mongol army's attack has always been based on Shuchuan, and if you capture this place, you can go down the river to the east and take Lin'an. Möngke Khan entered Dashanguan from Longzhou, and a large area of Shuchuan was immediately captured, leaving only Hezhou Diaoyu City, and if this area fell, Shuchuan would all be in the hands of the Mongols.
First, Yu Jiu built the city
In 1241, Emperor Lizong of Song appointed Yu Jiu as a military attendant, a sichuan pacifying envoy, and concurrently served as the prefect of Chongqing, the governor of Sichuan, and the envoy of the Chu Road, and was fully responsible for the defense of Sichuan. Yu Jiu's free personality, courage and courage, was a rare elite talent at that time, and it was Song Lizong's wise move that saved Shuchuan.
In the sixteen years before Yu Jiu's arrival, Shuchuan had almost become a borderless land, and officials and military generals had acted recklessly, not only without any political achievements, but also the lives of the people were very embarrassing. At this point, Yu Jie decided to build diaoyu City, but many people did not support it, and Yu Jiu insisted on his decision: "If the city is formed, Shu will rely on peace, and if it is not successful, It will sit alone, and the kings will not be predetermined." ”
The mountainous terrain of Diaoyu Mountain is the confluence of Jialing River, Qu River and PeiJiang River, and the vertical height is 300 meters, which is the best choice for building a city. Yu Jie successively built more than ten cities and pools, such as Qingju, Dayu, Fishing, Genting, and Tiansheng, accumulating grass to store grain, and building weapons and equipment.
In addition, Yu Jiu carried out a large number of reforms in Sichuan, reorganized the ranks of officers, and dismissed a large number of moths and dereliction of duty, and it was Yu Jiu's series of reforms and infrastructure construction that turned Diaoyu City into a fighting fortress, so the Battle of Diaoyu City was successful.
Second, stick to the fortified city
In 1254, Wang Jian was promoted to Zhihe Prefecture and was in charge of the defense of Diaoyu City, Wang Jian served under Meng Jue and Yu Jiu, and was a capable general. Wang Jian was also the general manager of the Battle of Diaoyu City, and after he took over, he continued to improve the defense of Diaoyu City and drilled ninety-two wells in the city to ensure the water source problem in the city.
After Wang Jian took over, Diaoyu City eventually became a well-armed, well-supplied, and highly morale-boosted city, coupled with extremely dangerous terrain, which made the Mongolian army fearful.
As a traditional Mongol, Möngke Khan did not care about diaoyu City, believing that the army could be wiped out as soon as it passed, and it turned out that Möngke was careless. At first, the Mongols first saluted and then sent Jin Guobao as emissaries to persuade them to surrender. After years of construction, Diaoyu City was waiting for this battle, how could it surrender, Wang Jian directly ordered the execution of Jin Guobao.
This time Möngke Khan was angry, and the Mongol Great Khan personally marched, and he was humiliated? Möngke then ordered a siege of the city. Although the Mongol cavalry was very good at field combat, it was really unable to play an advantage in the mountains, and it was a ninety-degree vertical wall, and it was as high as three hundred meters, which was too difficult for the Mongols.
Möngke Khan could not control this much, even if he used a pile of human life, he would take this city. At that time, Mongolia already had a lot of modern siege equipment, and the trebuchet kept greeting the city, but it did not have any effect. The Mongols had to climb up with their hands and feet, the Mongolian army was about 40,000 people, while the Song army in the city was less than 20,000, but it was clear to see from above, and the Song army still occupied an absolute advantage.
Within two months, the Mongol army made no progress in attacking the city, and successive attacks on Dongxinmen and Zhenximen were declared unsuccessful. There were more and more corpses under the city, and we can imagine that the Mongol soldiers had to lean their heads back and use all the body parts to find ways to increase the friction, perhaps to climb up, and they were greeted by stones and bows and arrows, and in that part of Sichuan, where there was more rain, the walls were slippery, and one who did not pay attention could fall to pieces.
Seeing that the attack could not be attacked, Möngke had to order the attack to stop. In April 1259, the Mongol army launched another attack, which at first had no effect, but in a night raid, the Mongol army captured the outer city of Yizicheng. When Wang Jian heard the news, he immediately led his troops to kill them, and after a period of noise, the Mongolian army was beaten back again.
Will Möngke Khan admit it? Of course not, Diaoyu City has been besieged for months, but the Mongolian army has made no progress. The fishing city is full of materials, can maintain the supply for a long time, and is not afraid of protracted war at all. In addition, the Song army would not sit still, Wang Jian often sneaked out of the city at night from the small tunnel in the city to sneak up on the enemy, this tunnel was very small, only to allow one person to pass, so the Mongols could neither sleep well nor fight, and morale became more and more low.
Where did the momentum of Pingxia's extinction of gold go? It turned out that the Mongols were not man-eating demon kings, and they had no choice but to face the Fishing City. In order to humiliate the Mongols, Wang Jian threw dozens of pounds of fresh fish and noodle cakes in the city to the Mongols, letting them know that "the Erbei soldiers can cook fresh cakes, and if they keep it for ten years, they will not be able to get it." ”
III. The Death of Mungo
The brave and fearless Möngke still did not concede defeat, and this time he personally came to the battle line and commanded the battle from a high place. The Mongols continued to repeat their previous operations, attacking over and over again, and being beaten back again and again, but what the Mongols did not expect was that their position as Khan was exposed.
Perhaps Wang Jian, or other generals, found a leading figure in the Mongolian army and "pointed fingers" at the high slope, so the Song army aimed the trebuchet at Möngke Khan. The accuracy of the trebuchet is not necessarily high, but its lethality is very large, dozens of pounds of large stones thrown down from a height of several hundred meters, how destructive the force is, it is estimated that only Mongolian soldiers know.
An unknown large stone hit Möngke Khan in this way. In fact, the stone did not hit completely, just like the bullet shrapnel, it was the flying stone fragments that injured Mungo.
The Great Khan was injured, what else did he have in mind to fight? With that, the Mongols finally withdrew, and Möngke died shortly after. If you can find this stone, you should put it in the museum to commemorate it, because he changed the course of history.
When the Mongol Khan was hung up, the Mongol cavalry all over the world had to withdraw, because they wanted to elect a new Khan, so the peoples of the world who were oppressed by the Mongols were relieved, and the Southern Song Dynasty extended its life expectancy by nearly twenty years.
Fourth, loyalty and righteousness will always exist
The most important factor for the victory in the Battle of Diaoyu City was the dangerous terrain, the fortified city, and the stubborn resistance of the Song army, which saved the last pass of Shuchuan.
After Wang Jian was deposed, his successor was Zhang Yu, who still adhered to his mission. Until the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, the defenders of Diaoyu City were replaced by several people, and the Mongols could not conquer this vast city, and finally the defender Wang Li surrendered to Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan promised not to kill the people in the city, and the Diaoyu City came out, and from the beginning to the end, the Diaoyu City persisted for thirty-six years.
The people and the army of Shuchuan, they have the determination to defend their homeland, they have excellent generals, they have strong soldiers, they have their own beliefs and ambitions, until the last moment, thirty-two guards do not want to live in the world, so they pull out their swords and martyr themselves.
Perhaps the military and civilians of Diaoyu City can represent the real Song people, who are not afraid of strong enemies and swear to defend the country to the death, at that moment, the Song people are powerful, indomitable, and eternal.
