The China Paper Association recently released the "2023 China Paper Industry Annual Report", which provides a detailed analysis of the production, consumption, economic indicators, import and export of China's paper industry in 2023, the details are as follows:

Production and consumption of paper and cardboard

General situation of paper and cardboard

Production volume: In 2023, the national paper and cardboard production volume will be 129.65 million tons, an increase of 4.35% compared with 2022.

Consumption: In 2023, the national consumption of paper and cardboard will be 131.65 million tons, an increase of 6.14% over 2022.

Per capita annual consumption: In 2023, the national per capita annual consumption of paper and cardboard will be 93.37 kg.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, the average annual growth rate of paper and cardboard production is 2.40%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption is 3.02%.

Production and consumption of major paper and cardboard varieties

Newsprint:

Production volume: The production volume of newsprint in 2023 will be 800,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 11.11%.

Consumption: In 2023, newsprint consumption will be 1.29 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4.44%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, the average annual growth rate of production is -14.42%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption is -9.63%.

Uncoated Printing Paper:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 18.05 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.03%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 17.11 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.97%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 0.57% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 0.55%.

Coated Printing Paper:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 6.6 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.54%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 5.13 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.60%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, the average annual growth rate of production is -1.77%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption is -2.17%.

Coated paper (a kind of coated printing paper):

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 6.3 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.61%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 4.97 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.22%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of -0.93% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of -1.83%.

Wrapping paper:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 7.55 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.42%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 7.73 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.75%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.68% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 1.69%.

Containerboard:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 28.95 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.02%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 34.18 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.20%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 3.20% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 4.81%.

White Cardboard:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 16.55 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.09%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 14.56 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.58%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.92% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 1.26%.

Tissue Paper:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 12.1 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.61%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 11.03 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.15%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 4.28% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 4.24%.

Corrugated base paper:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 29.15 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.23%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 32.72 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.70%.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 3.41% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 4.77%.

Specialty Paper & Paperboard:

Production volume: The production volume in 2023 will be 4.45 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.71%.

Consumption: Consumption in 2023 will be 2.8 million tons, down 2.44% year-on-year.

Long-term trend: Between 2014 and 2023, production will grow at an average annual rate of 6.62% and consumption will grow at an average annual rate of 3.52%.

The completion of economic indicators of paper and cardboard production enterprises

Industry-wide operating income and profit

In 2023, the industry-wide operating income will be 1.39 trillion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.39%.

The total profit was 50.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.39%.

Papermaking production enterprises

There are 2,567 paper production enterprises, and 688 loss-making enterprises, accounting for 26.80%.

Pulp production and consumption

Pulp production

In 2023, the total pulp production in the country will be 88.23 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.75%.

Among them, wood pulp was 23.12 million tons, an increase of 9.31%; 59.36 million tons of recycled pulp, an increase of 0.37%; non-wood pulp was 5.75 million tons, an increase of 3.05%.

Pulp consumption

In 2023, the total pulp consumption in the country will be 118.99 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.35%.

Among them, 49.31 million tons of wood pulp, accounting for 42% of the total pulp consumption (imported wood pulp accounted for 23%, domestic wood pulp accounted for 19%); 64.35 million tons of recycled pulp, accounting for 54% of the total pulp consumption (imported recycled pulp accounted for 4%, domestic recycled pulp accounted for 50%); 5.33 million tons of non-wood pulp, accounting for 4% of the total pulp consumption.

Utilization of waste paper

In 2023, the total amount of domestic recycled waste paper will be 67.37 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.31%.

The recycling rate of waste paper was 51.2%, and the utilization rate of waste paper was 52.4%.

Production and consumption of paper products

Paper product production enterprises

In 2023, there will be 5,043 paper product production enterprises above designated size in China.

Production and consumption of paper products

The production volume was 73.51 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 0.38%.

The consumption was 68.23 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.07%.

The import volume was 120,000 tons, and the export volume was 5.4 million tons.

Import and export of paper and cardboard, pulp, waste paper and paper products

Imports

In 2023, the import of paper and cardboard will be 11.32 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 35.41%.

Pulp imports were 37.07 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 25.07%.

The import of waste paper was 580,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.75%.

The import of paper products was 120,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 25.00%.

Exports

In 2023, the export of paper and cardboard will be 9.32 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.62%.

Pulp exports were 243,700 tons, down 8.66% year-on-year.

The export of waste paper was 1,100 tons, a year-on-year increase of 266.67%.

The export of paper products was 5.4 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.43%.

Layout and concentration of paper and cardboard production

Regional layout

The output of paper and cardboard in 11 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the eastern region accounted for 68.2% of the country.

Eight provinces (regions) in the central region accounted for 19.2%.

The 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the western region accounted for 12.6 percent.

Production in major provinces

In 2023, the output of paper and cardboard in 18 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) including Shandong Province, Guangdong Province, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, and Fujian Province will exceed 1 million tons, totaling 125.97 million tons, accounting for 97.16% of the total output of paper and cardboard in the country.
