Lin Hongmin was born in Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province in November 1959. In 1972, he entered the Municipal Chess Youth Training Class, and was taught and nurtured by famous chess players Hu Ronghua, Xu Tianli, Zhu Yongkang and the late chess veteran Zhu Jianqiu, and his chess skills improved rapidly.
In 1975, Lin Hongmin was transferred to the municipal chess team, and after several years of hard training, he represented the Shanghai team for the first time in the 4th National Games chess competition, and won the team championship. Since then, Lin Hongmin has made great contributions to the Shanghai team winning the four national team championships in 1979, 1986, 1991 and 1994.
In the national individual competition, Lin Hongmin has been in the top six four times. In 1983, he won the "Hengshun Cup" Famous Players Invitational Tournament and won the third place in the National Individual Chess Tournament in the same year. In 1986, he finished fourth in the country; In 1991, it won the sixth place in the country; In 1997, it won the fourth place in the country.
Lin Hongmin's chess style is steady and delicate, he is good at flying in the first hand and reversing the palace horse in the back, and he is good at transporting the game in the middle game, and he is not chaotic in the face of danger. He has also won the championship of the "Seven Star Cup" International Invitational Tournament, the "Jiangxiang Cup" and the "Longjiang Electrician Cup". In 1987, Lin Hongmin won the first place in the 3rd "Seven Star Cup" International Chess Invitational Tournament. In 1998, he participated in the 10th Asian Chess Championship with the Chinese team "Chunlan Cup", as one of the main members of the men's team championship team, and won the title of chess grandmaster in the same year. In 2004, Lin Hongmin represented China again in the 13th Asian Cup, helping the Chinese team win the men's team championship.
Lin Hongmin has performed well in his career, defeating many outstanding chess players, such as three times against Xu Yinchuan, four times against Li Laiqun, twice over Lu Qin, Zhao Guorong, Liu Dahua, Yu Youhua, and also over Hong Zhi, Zhao Xinxin, Xu Chao, etc. His excellence in the chess world has made him a highly recognized grandmaster. Later in his career, Lin Hongmin served as the coach of the Shanghai team. In 2017, he was still on the weevils list of the Shanghai Army.
