The ACM Data Management Committee (SIGMOD) announced that the 2024 SIGMOD System Award will be awarded to the R&D team of the open-source distributed deep learning platform Apache SINGA. As the earliest initiator and project manager of the system, Huang Mingjun, an overseas academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Singapore Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a foreign academician of the European Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences, a Li Kong Chian Centennial Chair Professor of the National University of Singapore, a distinguished visiting professor of Tsinghua University, a professor of the Yangtze River Chair (adjunct) of Zhejiang University, a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is among them.

SIGMOD has the highest academic standing in the field of global databases. This is the third time that Academician Huang Mingjun has won SIGMOD-related awards, and it is also the third time that he has won the honor of alongside Turing Award winners.

The National University Hospital of Singapore and the Singapore General Hospital use Apache SINGA to analyze MRI and X-ray images to improve the identification of health issues. The system's AI engine is also able to match photos of common local dishes in the database with food photos taken by users' mobile phones, helping users manage health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Academician Huang Mingjun has won the SIGMOD award three times

As early as 15 years ago, Academician Huang has received relevant awards from SIGMOD.

In 2009, Academician Huang Mingjun was awarded the 2009 SIGMOD Contributions Award for his continuous and selfless contribution to the promotion and pursuit of high-standard research on databases at the international and regional levels.

In 2020, Academician Huang was awarded the 2020 SIGMOD EF Codd Innovations Award for his outstanding contributions to the system design and development of large-scale data management and analysis. The award recognizes both his groundbreaking research in the database space and his success in building end-to-end big data solutions.

In 2024, the joint team formed by Academician Huang's research group, Zhejiang University, and NetEase won the 2024 SIGMOD Systems Award for their continuous and outstanding contributions to the development of the distributed, efficient, scalable, and easy-to-use deep learning platform Apache SINGA.

Huang Mingjun

In 1985, he graduated from Monash University in Australia with a bachelor's degree with first class honours. He received his PhD in 1989 and joined the National University of Singapore, where he was promoted to full professor in 2000. From 2007 to 2013, he served as Dean of the School of Computer Science, during which time he raised NUS to 8th in the world in the QS Computer Science Rankings.
