Qashqai's sister car is a full hybrid crossover that caters to a wide range of needs. We started with the Visia version, which has five seats and front-wheel drive, but this hybrid system of Nissan is very complex: there is an electric motor connected to the wheels in the front and a (4x4) electric motor in the rear. 214 horsepower, fast and smooth shooting. The current that powers the electric unit (through a lithium-ion "pile" with a capacity of 1.73 kWh) is generated by a complex 1.5 turbocharged three-cylinder engine with variable compression capacity, which causes slight vibrations (mainly when cold), but very quiet. In general, even when driving, the car is relaxed and consumes very little (as long as you drive slowly, we have a speed of 130 km/l, taking into account 10.4 km/l). The Nissan X-Trail in the test is equipped with 20-inch wheels for precise parking in short spaces and corners. Fast and accurate engine power management and specific driving modes for snow and dirt roads (see Learn more) ensure effective traction on slippery roads. The car is expensive, but well-decorated and well-equipped: Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, three-zone automatic air conditioning, LED matrix headlights, and a sliding sofa are just some of the accessories that come standard.
Dashboard and controls
The installation of the dashboard is practically identical to that of Qashqai: classic and well-made, with large inserts in eco-leather and dark fake wood. The "Climate" works well, with intuitive controls, but the backlit symbol is barely visible in daylight. The dashboard is very readable, though, and there's also a color head-up display. The glove box is not very large; The exceptions are the compartments under the console and those accessible by lifting the comfortable central armrest: both compartments are new compared to Qashqai.
Comfort
Riding the Nissan X-Trail is easy, with plenty of space and a wide range of adjustable positions. The armchair is not very closed, but it is large, it can be heated, and the height and lumbar area can be adjusted. The long seats are also suitable for taller people. The large sofa has two sliding sections (22 cm) and is heatable. The backrest is divided into three sections (the middle part can be used as a handrail and drink holder) and the tilt is adjustable. The cabinet is equipped with three-zone climate vents and two USB outlets. The two folding seats are somewhat difficult to use and are suitable for short trips.
Baggage compartment
Two small seats in the third row, folded to take away a few centimeters of height, but the soft awning also adapts to slightly protruding luggage. By folding the two rows of rear seats, the Nissan X-Trail's cabin is long and flat; The finish is discreet and the wheel arches are a bit bulky. The electric tailgate is huge. The third-row seats are lowered by pull straps; Keep it up, space is limited: only 127 liters.
Comfortable and outstanding, but on the highway it's a bit "drunk".
In the city square, not too wide, the Nissan 1.5 starts very little and is very quiet: it transmits only slight vibrations. If desired, the speed can be controlled using the electronic pedal only by the throttle (the brake can only be used for parking and emergencies). The fuel consumption of 16.9 km/l is good, but it is no exception.
When out of town, it's first and foremost a relaxing car: soundproofed, with advanced and fairly direct steering and balanced cornering performance; Reduces body roll. Even with a simple driving style, comfort does not decrease, and the dynamism of the electric motor makes it possible: the roar of 1.5 remains in the background. Average fuel consumption: 18.2 km / l.
On the highway, the Nissan X-Trail's semi-autonomous driving works well; If there is little traffic, you can hand it over to the electronics and just put your hands on the steering wheel. In any case, the car is quiet (only a little bit of tire rolling noise), the shock absorption is good, stable and lifts up quickly. But at 130 mph, we only covered 10.4 kilometers per liter.
Off-road
4x4 traction is entrusted to two electric motors, which manage power quickly and precisely according to the available grip; With the off-road (for mud or sand) or snow (for snow) driving modes, you can climb hills well. There's also a hill descent control system, which automatically limits the speed on steep slopes to 8 km/h.
