In the 1/8 final against Denmark, Germany won 2-0.
Luck also plays a role in football, and that was arguably the case for Germany in this victory, as there were two decisions that upset Denmark.
The first occurred in the second half when the score was 0-0 when Thomas Delaney was ruled offside and Joachim Anderson's shot was disallowed under semi-automatic offside techniques.
The Germans were then awarded a penalty after David Raum's pass touched Anderson's outstretched arm, adding to Anderson's pain.
This made Denmark coach Kasper Hiyulmander furious at his post-match press conference.
Hjulmand pointed to photographic evidence from his phone that showed how insignificant the offside was.
"I have a picture of a centimeter offside, it's impossible," he said. "You can't make a single centimetre of penalty."
Commenting on Anderson's handball, Hjulmande added: "We have been told that our defenders should run around with their hands behind their backs".
'The race was decided by two VAR decisions and it was the decisive 16 seconds'.
