The round-nosed monitor lizard, a national first-class protected animal, appeared in Longling, Yunnan

Kunming, 15 Jul (Xinhua) -- A few days ago, cadres of a village in Mucheng Township, Longling County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, photographed a huge lizard on the way to the patrol, and Wang Jishan, ph.D., of the Kunming Survey and Design Institute of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, identified the animal as a round-nosed monitor lizard under national key protection. According to reports, this is more than 10 years later, the round-nosed monitor lizard once again "showed its face" in Longling.

A video taken by Yang Guojun, a village cadre in Laomanpo Village, Mucheng Township, Longling County, during the patrol showed a huge lizard sticking its head out of the stone crack, as if looking for something, and then swinging its long tail, dancing on its thick and powerful limbs, climbing up the stone and disappearing into the bushes.

Dr. Wang Jishan has been engaged in biodiversity conservation research for many years, according to him, the round-nosed monitor lizard belongs to the national first-level key protected wild animals, is listed in the "Red Book of Endangered Animals in China" critically endangered species, in Longling County mainly inhabits the Longling Little Black Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve in Jiangshan Zi Reserve and the surrounding area of the dry and hot river valley, near the bushes, grasses and other hidden environments, the wild encounter rate is usually low. "A good ecological environment is an indispensable condition for wildlife to inhabit." Wang Jishan said that as an ecological indicator species, round-nosed monitor lizards are very sensitive to the quality of the ecological environment of their habitats. After more than 10 years, the round-nosed monitor lizard has once again "appeared" in Longling, reflecting the effective ecological environmental protection work of Longling from one side.
