Meta recently launched a new tool designed specifically for Quest users to force software updates over a wired connection, giving users a new way to update.
Luna, an avid follower of XR technology and a veteran data mining expert, was the first to discover the existence of this tool. This tool allows users to update the Quest's operating system directly using a USB cable via the "Sideload Update" option in the Quest recovery menu.
Not only did Luna share a screenshot, but also provided a link to an information page detailing how the seemingly web-based update tool works. However, the page is currently inaccessible and displays a 404 status.
According to the tool, the tool is designed to "help resolve software-related issues, such as performance degradation or unresponsive applications." At the same time, updating the software does not affect the data saved on the device, including app progress and personalization settings. ”
Luna also showed a screenshot of the software update tool's support page, detailing what you need to use the tool: you need at least 2GB of free storage space on your computer, you need to use the USB-C cable that came with your headset, and make sure you back up your headset data before updating.
If the tool is officially launched, it will undoubtedly give Quest users more operational flexibility, allowing them to choose when they want to download system updates. However, it remains to be seen how open the tool is and whether it allows users to effectively roll back updates.
