三星第二代3nm良率仅20%,Exynos 2500或将无缘Galaxy S25系列

On June 22, according to Korean media ZDNet Korea, although Samsung Electronics' latest Exynos 2500 processor has been taped out, the current yield is still slightly less than 20%, and it is uncertain whether it can be used in the Galaxy S25 series flagship smartphones in the future. Previously, Guo Ming, an analyst at Tianfeng International Securities, also broke the news that the Exynos 2500 processor may not be available because of lower than the expected 3nm production, and Qualcomm may be the only processor supplier for the Galaxy S25 series.

However, according to Notebookcheck, Samsung has not given up on the Exynos 2500 and is currently focusing on the mass production of the new SoC, and is looking for ways to improve the yield rate of mass production. The key to the low yield of the Exynos 2500 is that it uses Samsung's second-generation 3nm GAA process technology, SF3, which has a yield of only 20%. However, since there is still a lot of time before the official launch of the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung hopes to work hard to increase the yield rate of the Exynos 2500 to 60% by October this year to meet the standard of mass production.

Previous rumors have shown that the Exynos 2500 will continue to use a 1+2+3+4 ten-core quad-cluster CPU architecture. However, the Exynos 2500 will switch to Cortex-X5 ultra-large cores and Cortex-A730 large cores, which will bring further performance improvements compared to the Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 in the Exynos 2400, and the maximum clock speed may also reach around 3.2GHz-3.3GHz, and will integrate AMD's GPU IP. Preliminary tests show that the Exynos 2500 has a good performance, beating the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in both CPU and GPU performance.

In contrast, Qualcomm Shinichi's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is more powerful, but the rumored cost is 25%-30% higher than that of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to $190-200, mainly because Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 uses TSMC's latest and more expensive N3E process.

Obviously, Samsung hopes that the Exynos 2500 can help it increase the proportion of its self-developed chips to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm processors and reduce procurement costs. On the other hand, if the Exynos 2500 can be successfully adopted by the Galaxy S25 series, it will also help Samsung's own second-generation 3nm GAA process to be mass-produced and shipped, which can serve as a good demonstration for other potential customers.

However, at present, the yield of Samsung's own second-generation 3nm GAA process has become an obstacle, and Samsung needs to improve the yield as soon as possible, otherwise the Galaxy S25 series can only use Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processors.
