Who is Fine Orchestra? Most people will be a little blindsided when they hear this name, but their songs such as "Breathe Decide" and "No One Is Happier Than Me" are almost unknown on short video platforms. Not long ago, they challenged Sun Nan in the unveiling competition of "Singer 2024", which made many viewers know this group of low-key independent musicians. Recently, Fine Orchestra's latest album "Ruin Amusement" has been launched on the music platform, lead singer Josie and songwriter Liu Guannan accepted an exclusive interview with local reporters to talk about their journey from medical students to musicians.

Challenge Sun Nan to make his TV variety show debut

"Singer 2024" is the first variety show that the Fine Orchestra participated in and broadcast, and this starting point can be described as quite high.

Fine Band's lead singer Josie recalled that they received an invitation from the program team on Friday, a week before they participated in the opening competition, that is, just a week before the live broadcast. Although the Fine Orchestra has many highly disseminated songs, such as "Breathe Decide", "No One Is Happier Than Me", "Don't Leave If You Want to Get Rain" and other works have been sung countless times on tours and music festivals, and are also the material for many people on short video platforms to "create two things" and cover songs, they have never appeared on TV variety shows. And that period of time was also the time when "Singer 2024" attracted the most attention from the audience because of competition topics such as "real live broadcast and full open mic".

At the live broadcast of the "Singer 2024" unveiling competition, the Fine Orchestra learned that in the limited-time voting launched by Weibo, netizens voted for them to play against Sun Nan. "When we heard the news, we were relatively calm, and we thought that if we could finish our songs well, we would be very successful." Unexpectedly, when standing on the stage, Josie suddenly became nervous, "I'm not nervous because I want to sing with the microphone open, every one of our performances is done like this, but the stage of "Singer" is really magical, and I can't help but be nervous when I stand there." ”

In the end, the Fine Orchestra sang the masterpiece "Breathe Decision" brilliantly, but lost to Sun Nan in the voting of 500 public auditors on the spot and 500 international public auditors on the cloud. "Our opponent Mr. Sun Nan is really powerful, his emotions and his skills shocked us." Liu Guannan, songwriter of the Fine Orchestra, said that in the last round of "Singer 2024", it is impossible to say that there are no regrets, "The regret is not that we lost, but the more regret is that we can't continue to sing our own songs to everyone." ”

Resolutely transitioned from a medical student to making music

Fine Orchestra is an independent orchestra founded on campus, but Josie and Liu Guannan are not music majors, but medical students.

In 2012, Josie and Liu Guannan were still studying at Southwest Medical University, and at the campus singer competition that year, Liu Guannan heard Josie's bright and fresh timbre, so he invited her to try singing the songs she had written. "At that time, we didn't graduate, so we formed an orchestra with the mentality of playing music and tried to sing songs written by Guannan." In 2015, Josie said, they formed the "Fine Band" and combined the songs they had written and recorded into their first album, "I'm sorry." This album was recorded relatively simply, just like all independent musicians and independent bands, they released the album on NetEase Cloud Music.

In 2017, Josie was in graduate school, and Liu Guannan had graduated. Seeing that the song posted on the Internet attracted a lot of listeners, the two decided to put on a show. The two booked a venue in Chengdu and contacted the ticket service to sell tickets, but they didn't make too many complicated preparations, and more than 1,000 tickets were sold out smoothly. During the performance, the warm atmosphere infected Josie and Liu Guannan on stage, and they decided: to make music full-time!

For a long time, although Josie and Liu Guannan love music, they have not received professional music training, and Liu Guannan's guitar was only learned in college. Josie has loved singing since she was a child, she was born with a good voice, and when she was in junior high school, she wanted to study music as an art student, but her family disagreed. Until 2017, when they decided to make music full-time, her parents still had reservations about her choice, "After all, I can find a very good job in my major, and my parents think that singing is too unstable." Despite the resistance they both encountered to a greater or lesser extent from their families, Josie and Liu Guannan still insisted on their choice.

Low-key writing songs are loved by the whole network "high-profile".

Since the formation of the orchestra, their life has been to write and sing songs quietly, but even they didn't expect that the songs of the Fine Orchestra would be so popular in the era of short videos.

The most popular hit, "Breathe Decisions", was included on Fine's first album of 2015. Around 2017, when the first generation of live broadcast platforms such as Douyu and Huya were just popular, this song became a hot song in the live broadcast room, and later swept the major live broadcast platforms. In the era of focusing on traffic, the "data" of the Fine Orchestra has long been considerable, but the two of them are still low-key, and it was not until this year that they began to participate in some variety shows with strong musical attributes. "Maybe our music is more suitable for these platforms." Liu Guannan said that as an independent band, they didn't even have an agent or team for a long time, let alone do song promotion, and creation and performance were their only focus in life.

Over the years, Liu Guannan has always insisted: "If one day, what I write can't move me, I will definitely never touch music again." The same goes for their latest album, "Ruin Fun," "Amusement refers to a playground, and ruins and amusement are a pair of tangled and opposing states, but I think everyone will be in this contradictory state." Liu Guannan said that everyone has their own "ruins" and their own "amusements" in their hearts, and different states are transformed into different songs.

"In my opinion, music is the expression of emotions, and other techniques and theories are just means and carriers, and how to use them varies from person to person, but art must return to emotions after all." This is Liu Guannan's creative philosophy, and I believe it is the main reason why the Fine Orchestra impresses the audience.
