Li Deren, born in Tai County, Jiangsu Province in 1939, was admitted to the Department of Aerial Surveying of Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping after graduating from middle school, under the tutelage of Academician Wang Zhizhuo.
In 1983, he entered the University of Stuttgart in Germany for a Ph.D. under Professor Ackermann, President of the European Photogrammetry Experiment.
Li Deren completed his doctoral studies in only 2 years, and his 255-page doctoral dissertation "Theory and Experiment of the Possibility of Distinguishing the Gross Error of Control Points and Systematic Errors of Photographs in Photogrammetry Adjustment" set a record for the highest doctoral defense at the University of Stuttgart with a score of "1 point plus 5 stars", which has not been surpassed so far.
