Zeng Hou Yi Chime: "Treasure of the Country"

In 1978, this set of Zeng Hou Yi chimes was unearthed in Suixian, Hubei, which is today's Suizhou. At that time, this place was a repair shop for the radar unit of the Air Force. During the construction process, the head of the unit discovered the anomaly, so he ordered the blasting to be stopped and replaced with manual excavation. Later, after professional excavations by archaeologists, this set of chimes was able to regain the light of day.

The way the chimes are played is very unique, and it requires the cooperation of multiple musicians. The player of the chimes needs to determine the pronunciation and order of each chime according to the inscription and rhythm of the chimes. During the performance, the musicians need to strike the chimes with a mallet to produce different notes and rhythms.

This set of chimes is the largest number of chimes found in China, the best preserved, the most complete rhythm, the most magnificent set of chimes so far. Its bell frame is tall, by two facades of different lengths, vertically intersecting, in the shape of curved teeth, seven painted wooden beams, both ends are reinforced with a coiled dragon pattern copper sleeve, the whole set of bells is a total of 65 pieces, divided into three layers and eight groups to hang on the bell frame. The three groups on the upper floor are nineteen pieces of bells, and the columns are logs. The three groups in the middle layer are Yong bells, 33 pieces, divided into short, no and long pieces. The lower layer is composed of two large sets of 12 large long bells, and a large bell clock, and the pillars of the middle and lower two floors, each of which is made of three bronze saber warriors. There are more than 3,000 inscriptions in the whole set of bells, which record the numbering, inscription, pronunciation and rhythm of the bells.

The instrument of ritual music and the culture of ritual music

Ritual culture is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, which includes two aspects: ritual and music. Rite refers to social order and norms, while music refers to music and dance. In ancient China, the culture of ritual music was regarded as an important means of governing the country and the country, which regulated people's behavior and thoughts through the form of music and dance, and cultivated people's moral character and cultural literacy.

The bell of Marquis Yi is one of the important carriers of ritual music culture, which embodies the concept and cultural connotation of ritual music in ancient China through the shape, inscription and performance mode of the bell. The shape and inscription of the chimes reflect the social system and cultural traditions of the time, while the way the chimes are played reflects the musical aesthetics and cultural spirit of ancient China.

The excavation of the bell of Marquis Yi is of great significance to our study of ancient Chinese ritual and music culture. It provides us with a window into the ancient Chinese ritual music culture, allowing us to have a deeper understanding of the social system, cultural traditions and musical aesthetics of ancient China. At the same time, the excavation of the bell of Zeng Houyi also provides important material materials for us to study the bronze casting technology and music culture of ancient China.
