The "Animal Master" series consists of a bench standing on a replay with a variety of animals. Inspired by a dirty old stool he saw at the market, it reminded him of his early youth. For example, Zhang Ruo started by drawing a little pig, standing on the leg of a stool with his eyes closed, looking like he was thinking about something. Funny but also ridiculous. Later, Zhang Ruo added other animals to the series. Animals that are close to people. So close that their own existential situation has almost disappeared. They must maintain a stable posture. It makes us hold up a mirror to the artist, who believes we can learn something from the animals in his sculptures.

Labor Series (2011 – 2021)

"This is a group of sculptures about my childhood memories. It is a combination of metal sculptures and ancient artifacts, full of the breath of life.

I was born in an ordinary rural family in northern China. My ancestors have lived for generations looking at the loess and looking up at the sky. Hard labor sustains a simple life. When I was a child, I followed adults to work in the fields, which is the deepest memory of my childhood. Walking on the land you will smell the earth and hear the sounds of nature. Parents said that in the future, they should study hard, take the college entrance examination, and leave here; When I arrived at elementary school, the teacher said that knowledge changes fate, and we must make progress every day, so get out of here! Books have slowly become the object of my work.

One day, I went to college, and I learned more and more textbooks, which seemed logical, but I became more and more incomprehensible. After graduating, I came to Beijing to work as an artist, just as busy as the people here. What are the results of mental and material labor? People need jobs, why? Is work fate? Where will fate take us? I don't know, but I'm sure we can't stop again, we can't go back in time!
