Architectural firm Rockwell Group has recently completed the interior design of the Moxy East Village hotel. The hotel is the third collaboration between Rockwell Group and the Moxy brand, following the Moxy Times Square Hotel and the Moxy Chelsea Hotel. It sits across from the famous Webster Hall Music Club, just a few blocks from NYU and Union Square. With its unique design and ambiance, Moxy East Village pays homage to this vibrant, ever-changing neighborhood.

Historic hues are an important symbol of the New York City area, and colors from all eras can be found everywhere, even in harmony within the same building. Therefore, the design team made this sense of history the tone of the entire hotel. Inside, Moxy East Village is not only urban, but also houses a series of art installations designed specifically for it by contemporary artists. Each floor has its own character, which not only evokes memories of the city, but also provides an opportunity for travelers to explore and discover.

Design details

Entrance / Lobby

The entrance space on the ground floor of Moxy East Village has an industrial feel in terms of materials and tones. Walls made of Colton's corrosion-resistant steel are located below street level, extending from the hotel's façade to the interior lobby space; The smooth concrete at the entrance staircase also works with black steel and concrete slabs with detailed textures to create a cozy atmosphere. Since the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century, New York's downtown area has been a breeding ground and birthplace for all kinds of ideas. Located in the heart of the city, Moxy East Village is also heavily influenced by the music and art scene around it, with spaces such as the lobby and 24-hour takeaway bar giving it a pristine feel. The check-in counter is made from recycled materials by local artist studio Michael Sanzone Studio, making the space feel like a restored antique.

The graffiti tapestry on the wall behind the check-in counter, designed and produced by the En Viu art studio, hangs down to the floor, creating a surreal sensory effect in the entrance lobby space. Wandering around the hotel, especially when taking the elevator from the ground floor to the upper guest rooms and rooftop bar, guests will further appreciate the Rockwell Group's design sensibilities. The doors are made of black steel, and when the doors slowly open, the mirrored interior and a series of custom patterns crash into the eye. A grand staircase, similar to the New York City Fire Staircase, leads guests to the hotel's restaurant.

Located on the C2 floor, Little Sister Bar & Lounge

The walls of the stairwell leading to the underground rest space are painted with abstract spray-painted murals by San Francisco-based artist Apex related to New York's history. Little Sister Bar is a cave-like intimate space with barrel vaulted ceilings. LED strips on the ceiling not only accentuate the bottle decoration on the ceiling, but also accentuate the bar space, and these strips can also change color to create different spatial atmospheres for different events. Vintage lamps and jewel-coloured bench upholstered seats add a touch of warmth to the bar, while the bucolic interior finishes further hint at New York's rural history. In addition, the bar features a range of other luxurious amenities, such as a stone bar with mirrored countertops and red velvet chairs with leather-embossed accents in the VIP dining area.

位于C1层的Cathedral教堂餐厅

Cathédrale is an original, industrial-inspired dining space inspired by the Fillmore East Music Club and the legendary Lower East Side concert hall. This restaurant is not only a tribute to the Fillmore East Music Club, but also the character and vitality of the entire hotel. A long metal staircase leads guests to the Cathédrale church restaurant. The staircase, like the most common fire staircase in Manhattan's East Village, sandwiched between two buildings, is flanked by a golden brick wall on one side and a concrete wall on the other. Walking up this staircase full of surprises, guests can get a glimpse of the restaurant. Flashing neon fixtures mark the entrance to the restaurant's bar. The circular shape of the bar not only ensures visual communication between all guests, but also creates an immersive spatial experience, with luxurious details balanced with exposed concrete and historic interiors, giving the illusion of stepping back in time.

The restaurant's main dining space is three-storey and features a series of layered plaster walls and artwork. The ceiling is a suspended metal mesh art installation called Fillmore, created by the Rockwell Group in collaboration with Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi, which not only creates a dialogue with the restaurant's architectural space, but also creates a striking visual effect. The outdoor dining terrace with a retractable roof and copper framing system, combined with vegetation on the back wall, not only creates an indoor-to-outdoor transition experience, but also creates a secluded courtyard-like atmosphere.

The private dining space features a variety of music posters from the Fillmore East Club on the walls and ceiling, creating an immersive rock 'n' roll experience. The hallway leading to the cloakroom and bathroom continues the restaurant's avant-garde design concept with exposed copper pipes and interactive neon installations.

Alphabet Cafe & Bar on the C1 floor

Inspired by the punk music scene of the '70s and '80s in the East Village, the Rockwell Group transformed the hotel's lobby bar into a rebellious space. Pull back the blue velvet curtains and you'll see exposed concrete walls and mirrors with lyric graffiti. A bar made of organ pipes and black steel, a beverage cabinet made of ribbed glass and an industrial chandelier encased in a metal mesh transport visitors back in time in an instant. Through a fire-staircase-like corridor, guests not only have direct access to the lounge, but also have views of the rest of the hotel.

Alphabet Lounge located on Level C1

The hotel's lounge features a communal seating area, a skee-ball game and a carpet that looks like street art. The atmosphere of the lounge space is more varied and eclectic, giving the illusion of falling into another time and space. This illusion culminated in the café space: the design team combined old and new woodworking techniques to create a traditional counter with hand-carved traces of solid wood. In addition, there is an interactive iPad in the lounge where people can create their own graffiti and artwork, which are then displayed in a nearby corridor.

guest room

The corridors on the guest room level and the guest room interiors reflect the intersection of old and new. The corridor on the guest room level is created as an intriguing, dark and mysterious space that connects the futuristic, nature-inspired guest rooms. The design of the rooms focuses on the choice of materials, presenting an eclectic and casual visual effect. Various pieces of materials, such as glass with graffiti, fabrics made from seat belts, and canvas trims, etc., create a comfortable living environment for today's modern traveler. Embedded in the walls are a series of wooden spikes for hanging clothes, sconces, shelves and mirrors. The bed with integrated bed cabinet and built-in TV create a room-within-a-room. In addition, each room features artwork created by Spanish photographer Xan Padrón, who lives in New York.

Rooftop bar

Inspired by the casual backyards common in the East Village, the design team created the hotel's rooftop bar as a modern space that celebrates the local history and culture, as well as the vibrant university district that surrounds it. The bar is set up with lounge dining spaces of various styles and colors, creating a casual and eclectic atmosphere. In addition, the design team created a set-back seating space along the façade of the roof to create a great viewing space.
