Explain the nine pillars of TPM (Total Production and Maintenance) management

author:Lean consulting teacher Liu Zhi

TPM is not simply an activity that improves production capacity or reduces the partial benefits of equipment failures, but a comprehensive art that pursues the benefits of the whole.

Since the decision has been made to implement TPM, it is necessary to thoroughly promote several pillar activities in parallel, and it is necessary to "train production line employees to become operation experts; training equipment personnel to become maintenance doctors; Cultivating engineers to become experts in various fields" is the fundamental goal of improving the physical fitness of employees and the company. The real competitiveness of enterprises in the new century is the competition of talents, and TPM is a specific strategy to realize the competitiveness of talents.

Why does TPM achieve such great results? Why can TPM be deployed in different industries and sectors? Because there are corresponding methods for TPM for different industries and sectors. The following is a brief introduction to the nine major activities of TPM.

Explain the nine pillars of TPM (Total Production and Maintenance) management

TPM cornerstone - 5S activities

5S is the abbreviation of sorting, rectifying, sweeping, cleaning, and literacy. 5S activities are a basic activity, the foundation of all on-site activities, the necessary preparation and premise before the implementation of TPM stage activities, and the cornerstone of other pillar activities of TPM.

Training Pillar - Education and training that "begins with education and ends with education".

Educational activities are placed at the top of the pillars of TPM activities, and the main thing is to highlight the role of education in TPM activities, so that people who know everything will not stay in the company.

For enterprises, there is no experience in promoting TPM or any new things, and it must be obtained through education and exploration, and TPM will definitely not be implemented without education and training as a foundation. It can be said that education and training and 5S activities are the basic pillars of parallel.

Production pillar – the self-management activities of the manufacturing sector

The greatest success of TPM activities lies in the ability to mobilize all employees to participate, if the manufacturing department employees, who account for about 80% of the total number of employees in the enterprise, can carry out thorough self-management and improvement on the spot, it will inevitably improve the initiative and creativity, reduce the management level and management personnel, especially ordinary employees can participate in enterprise management through such activities, and can improve their own strength. Therefore, self-management activities are the mainstay of TPM.

Efficiency Pillar – Sector-wide thematic improvement activities and project activities

The self-management activities with the participation of all employees are mainly to eliminate the micro-defects and unreasonable phenomena that affect the enterprise, and play a role in preventing the gradual progress, but for individual outstanding problems, it is necessary to use traditional means to carry out project activities. In the TPM group activities, the activities are carried out in the form of thematic activities, and project teams can be formed to carry out activities that need to be cross-departmental.

Equipment Pillar – Professional security activities in the Equipment Division

Almost all products flow out of the equipment, and the production of modern enterprises is even more inseparable from the equipment. Doing a good job in equipment management is the fundamental way to improve production efficiency, and improving the skills and quality of personnel is also for better operation and control of equipment, so equipment management is very important and is one of the core issues that enterprises must face.

It is necessary to subdivide the functions of facility management, and professional maintenance activities are carried out by transferring the traditional day-to-day management of equipment to the production department to promote the independent management of equipment, while the specialized facility maintenance department devotes energy to preventive maintenance and planned maintenance, and improves the predictability of equipment status through diagnostic technology.

Transactional Pillar – Manages transactional innovation activities in the indirect sector

TPM is a long-lasting collective activity with the participation of all employees, and the activity cannot be sustained without the support of the management indirect department.

Strong support and support from other departments is a reliable guarantee for improving the results of TPM activities in the manufacturing sector, and through innovation activities, the administrative department can not only improve business efficiency and service awareness, but also cultivate the art of management and leadership, and cultivate management personnel with a management mind and a global mind.

Technology Pillar – Development of intelligence management activities in the technology sector

The design of products and equipment without defects is the duty of the R&D and technical departments, and the only possibility that can be achieved is to grasp the necessary information for product design and equipment design, and the necessary information is inseparable from the support of the production site and the maintenance and quality department.

Security Pillar – Security management activities of the security sector

Safety is the foundation of everything, and the premise of any activity is to ensure safety first. Safety activities are set in the 8th pillar, not the eighth most important safety, in fact, safety activities have always run through it from the beginning of 5S activities, and if there is a problem with safety in any activity, everything is equal to 0.

Quality Pillar - Quality assurance activities of the quality department

The focus of traditional quality activities has always been on results, and excellent quality cannot be guaranteed, let alone products without defects. This kind of post-event management activities are different from the quality activities of ex-ante management that grasp the source.

Quality assurance activities are placed in the last pillar because quality improvement is the fundamental purpose of production, and it is also the most difficult project in comparison.

The above nine major activities are interrelated and complementary to each other, so as to seek the overall comprehensive effect, and it is difficult for any partial activity to achieve great results.

For example, the manufacturing department is very hard to carry out self-management activities, but without the strong support of the equipment department, it is impossible to achieve great results;

Even though the facilities department is concentrating on professional maintenance and improvement of key issues, it is difficult for the activities to be fruitful without the support and cooperation of the management department. If some departments sit idly by, the departments that work hard will also slacken, and the activities will inevitably die.
