From people's travel to smart cities, from resource investigation to environmental monitoring, from disaster assessment to disaster prevention and mitigation...... The high-resolution Earth observation system is an indispensable strategic cornerstone of the mainland's economic and social development.

Overcome the core technology of global high-precision positioning and mapping of satellite remote sensing, solve a series of problems of high-precision processing of remote sensing satellite images, and lead the team to develop a fully automatic high-precision aerial and ground measurement system...... Li Deren, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Wuhan University, has been committed to improving the level of surveying, mapping and remote sensing earth observation in the mainland for decades.

On June 24, Li Deren, as the winner of the 2023 National Highest Science and Technology Award, wore a heavy medal at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Profile

Li Deren is a well-known photogrammetry and remote sensing scientist, who has been committed to improving the level of land observation in mainland surveying, mapping and remote sensing. He has overcome the core technology of global high-precision positioning and mapping of satellite remote sensing, solved a series of problems in high-precision processing of remote sensing satellite images, led the team to develop a fully automatic high-precision aerial and ground measurement system, and made outstanding contributions to the construction of high-precision and high-resolution earth observation system in the mainland.

Adhere to independent innovation

Conquer the core technology of satellite remote sensing

The high-precision and high-resolution earth observation system is like the "bright eyes" of a great country.

Adhering to independent innovation, the remote sensing technology and tools developed by Li Deren and his team have completely independent intellectual property rights. Such a report card condenses their hard work -

Under the condition that the core components of the mainland remote sensing satellite are limited and the software is controlled, he led the team to overcome the core technology of global high-precision positioning and mapping of satellite remote sensing, so that the independent positioning accuracy of domestic satellite images has reached the international leading level of the same kind.

He presided over the development of the mainland's independent and controllable 3S integrated surveying and mapping remote sensing series equipment and geographic information basic platform, leading the fundamental change from traditional surveying and mapping to information-based surveying and mapping remote sensing;

He created the theory of error differentiability and the gross error detection method to solve the century-old problem of the measurement field of systematic error, gross error and accidental error of measurement data......

As an internationally renowned surveying, mapping and remote sensing scientist and one of the pioneers of the mainland's high-precision and high-resolution earth observation system, Li Deren has developed a ground processing system for mainland remote sensing satellites, which has achieved leapfrog development from "scratch" and "from existence to good".

Catch up with the world's advanced level

"My goal is that the country urgently needs"

"A person should use his skills to do more for the country. Combining my interests, strengths, and the needs of the country is exactly what I am looking for. Recalling his choice on the road of scientific research, Li Deren said.

In 1939, Li Deren was born in Jiangsu Province and has excellent grades since childhood. After graduating from high school in 1957, he was admitted to the Aerial Survey Department of Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Cartography, which had just been established for one year.

In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the mainland urgently needed map data for large-scale economic construction and national defense construction, and the development of surveying and mapping technology was imminent.

"My goal is that the country is urgently needed, and the direction of education should meet the needs of strengthening the army, enriching the country, and benefiting the people." With such an ideal in mind, in 1982, Li Deren went to the Federal Republic of Germany for exchange and study.

At that time, his mentor gave him a challenging problem in the field of aerial surveying, which was to find a theory that could distinguish between accidental errors, systematic errors, and gross errors at the same time.

Li Deren absorbed knowledge like a sponge, worked more than ten hours a day, and finally found a solution to the problem in less than two years, completed his doctoral thesis in German, and returned to his homeland as soon as possible.

After returning to China, Li Deren led the team to make scientific research and determined to independently break through and develop a high-resolution earth observation system.

In 2010, the major project of the mainland's high-resolution earth observation system (hereinafter referred to as the high-resolution project) was fully launched.

With the implementation of the "high-resolution project", China's remote sensing satellite research, which is nearly 30 years later than that of Western countries, has achieved leapfrog development from "have" to "good", and the satellite resolution has been improved to 0.5 meters for civilian use, catching up with the world's advanced level.

From trekking through mountains and rivers to carrying machine measurements, to aerial remote sensing to satellite remote sensing, and then to the integration of communication, navigation and remote sensing...... On the Chinese's journey of "surveying the heavens and asking the earth," Li Deren has not stopped.

Lectures are given to new undergraduate students

"My duty is to impart knowledge"

At Wuhan University, there is a course that is praised by students as "the most extravagant basic course", which is jointly taught by six academicians including Li Deren.

Li Deren insisted on teaching "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" to first-year students on time. This 28-year-old foundation course is packed every time.

"The key to the competition of science and technology in the future world is the competition of talents." Li Deren believes that it is necessary to tell students what surveying and mapping science can "do" for the country and the "height" that the discipline can reach, and guide them to take the initiative to think and have the courage to climb.

In May 2024, the "Luojia-3" scientific experiment satellite 02 successfully entered the scheduled orbit, this satellite has a 0.5-meter resolution panchromatic imaging, and the chief scientist is Gong Jianya, a student of Li Deren and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

……

When it comes to the students' research, Li Deren is like a treasure. So far, he has trained more than 100 doctors, one of whom was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

"My responsibility is to impart knowledge." Li Deren said, "The students have their own achievements, which is my greatest achievement. ”

Generation after generation, stubble after stubble. Wuhan University has built a large-scale, full-scale, and complete school level of surveying, mapping and remote sensing discipline in the world, and the discipline of remote sensing earth observation has ranked first in the world for many years in the world university ranking center and other discipline rankings.

Lao Ji is in the woods, and his ambitions are thousands of miles. Li Deren told reporters: "The ultimate goal is to make remote sensing technology benefit the Chinese people, and even make China's contribution to the world." ”

The development of the ground processing system of the continental remote sensing satellite from scratch and from existence to perfection is inseparable from Li Deren, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a surveying, mapping and remote sensing scientist, the winner of the highest national science and technology award.

Li Deren's intersection with surveying, mapping and remote sensing began in college. While studying at the Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping, he attracted the attention of Wang Zhizhuo, the founder of aerial photogrammetry and remote sensing in China, when he questioned the reasonableness and boldness of famous experts in the industry. When Li Deren thought that he would soon become Wang Zhizhuo's student and start the road of surveying, mapping and remote sensing research, a turning point in fate suddenly came.

In that special historical period, Li Deren was assigned to work in Shijiazhuang Cement Products Factory after the end of decentralization, but he never thought it was a low point in his life. Li Deren said: "I worked on cement poles for a year, hammers, steel bars, and concrete cement in three shifts. When we were young, we thought that my parents gave birth to me and the country raised me, so no matter what work I do, I have to do it well. ”

With this spirit, Li Deren and his team successfully developed a new sulfoaluminate cement while working as a cement factory worker. He never lost hope and never gave up on his professional studies. In 1978, the state resumed graduate student enrollment, and Li Deren, who was 39 years old at the time, finally came to study with his mentor Wang Zhizhuo. In the second year, Li Deren took the overseas exam and took the first place.

In 1982, the 43-year-old Li Deren went to Germany to study at the University of Bonn and the University of Stuttgart. At the University of Stuttgart, he studied under the internationally renowned photogrammetry and remote sensing scientist Prof. Ackermann. At that time, Ackermann gave him a challenging problem in the field of aerial surveying. In less than two years, Li Deren solved the problem of the theory of error distinction, which is a difficult problem in the field of measurement, and the resulting doctoral dissertation still holds the record for the highest score in the history of the University of Stuttgart.

When he graduated with a doctorate, many German institutions extended olive branches to Li Deren, but he chose to return to China without hesitation. In February 1985, he returned to his alma mater, Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping, to teach, and started a long road of innovation and entrepreneurship for the country.

Li Deren said: "We now have the second largest number of remote sensing satellites in the world, and our resolution has reached exactly the same level as that of the United States, that is, 0.5 meters for civilian use, and its resolution, spectral resolution, spatial resolution, and optical, radar, infrared, and hyperspectral remote sensing have all caught up with the world level." ”

The ground processing system of remote sensing satellites developed by Li Deren has made outstanding contributions to national defense construction, economic development, and people's livelihood. In the eyes of student Wang Mi, the biggest motivation for Mr. Li to do scientific research comes from the needs of the country and the people.

In addition to being a scientist, Li Deren was also the president of Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping. He has said bluntly on several public occasions that of all titles, his favorite position is "teacher". Li Deren said: "The greatest joy of my life is to be a teacher, to train generations of young people, to teach them how to behave and learn. According to CCTV
