News 1: Lenovo realizes the promise of using domestic CPUs!

EETOP reported on June 29 that on Wednesday this week, Loongson released the Loongson platform adaptation dynamics for May 2024, which dynamically showed that 105 products were adapted to the LoongArch platform. These include three Lenovo products. They are:

Lenovo Wentian WxSphere Server Virtualization System Software V8.0

龙芯3C5000L/3C5000

Lenovo Wentian WxCloud Cloud Computing Management Platform V3.0

龙芯3C5000L/3C5000

Lenovo Wentian WxStack Hyper-Converged System Software V8.0

Loongson 3A6000

As the list shows, Lenovo has quietly deployed Loongson processors in its data centers and runs cloud services on them. The scale of the deployment is unknown, but the news highlights Lenovo's commitment to using Chinese CPUs.

According to a report by foreign technology media tomshardware, the deployment of 16-core 3C5000 processors for cloud services is a novelty, but it shows that Lenovo has confidence in these CPUs and their successors, which will come with up to 128 cores. Lenovo's support for the Loongson architecture is critical to making Chinese hardware a viable alternative to existing enterprise technologies. This support is expected to challenge companies such as AMD and Intel, especially given China's vast market, which includes large telecommunications companies with a wide customer base.

It's unclear how economically it makes sense to use a 16-core CPU for cloud services, as traditional x86 CPU vendors have more robust equivalents designed specifically for such workloads. However, Lenovo needs to understand how Loongson's CPUs perform in today's instances and try the next generation of processors based on the DragonChain microarchitecture that will be launched in the coming years.

On June 28, it was reported that during the recent interaction on the investor relations platform, Loongson Zhongke mentioned the upcoming release of the next-generation server processor Loongson 3C6000.

At the previous 7th Critical Information Infrastructure Autonomous Security Innovation Forum, Zhang Ge, vice president of Loongson, revealed that Loongson 3C6000, Loongson 3D6000, and Loongson 3E6000 have all completed tape-out and will be released in the fourth quarter of 2024.

According to the latest statement of the secretary of the board of directors of Loongson, the first sample of the Loongson 3C6000 series has been returned to the chip (that is, the tape-out has been successfully returned to the chip company), and it is being tested, which is generally in line with expectations, when the maximum of 16 cores is planned to be released in the fourth quarter.

For the first time, the Loongson 3C6000 processor will introduce Loongson Coherenent Link, a new coherent interconnection technology, similar to NVIDIA NVLink, which can support interconnection between 2-8 silicon wafers - theoretically up to 128 cores and 256 threads!

For example, Loongson 3B6000 is divided into BIN screening in 3C6000, selecting qualified 8-15 cores, and repackaging into 3B6000 for desktop or low-end servers, with a maximum of 30 cores per unit.

According to the R&D iterative development strategy of "structure upgrade generation, structure optimization generation, and process upgrade generation", Loongson 3B6600 will use the same process as Loongson 3A6000, and then increase the single-core performance by 20-30% through structural optimization, and use mature processes to achieve the performance of AMD and Intel's advanced processes.

Loongson Zhongke also admitted that the single-core performance of Loongson CPU still needs to be further improved, and there is still room to provide, and plans to continue to optimize from IPC, main frequency and other aspects, and strive to achieve the performance level of mainstream products of advanced technology in the next generation of products at mature process nodes.

According to the roadmap announced earlier, the Loongson No. 3 6000 series are all manufactured with a new LA664 core and 12nm process, of which the Loongson 3C6000 is the foundation, with a maximum of 16 cores and 32 threads.

The Loongson 3D6000 is a dual-chip package, which can achieve up to 32 cores and 64 threads, while the situation of the Loongson 3E6000 is not clear.

In the next 2024-2025, we will see that Loongson 3D7000/3E7000 is still the core of the LA664 architecture, but the manufacturing process is upgraded to 32 cores and 64 threads, 64 cores and 128 threads respectively!

In the desktop field, the next ones will be Loongson 3A6000/3B6000 and Loongson 3A7000/3B7000, which have the same process and architecture as the same series of products on the server side, but the specifications such as the number of cores are slightly lower.

The basic principles of the design of Loongson CPUs are:

Improve the performance of a single core first, and then increase the number of cores; Design optimization first, and then advanced technology to improve performance. After more than 20 years of development, the single-core performance of Loongson CPU has approached the international mainstream CPU level.

Loongson server CPU planning is:

At the same time, the single-core is improved, and multi-core, multi-threaded, high-speed interconnection, advanced packaging and other technologies are used to quickly form a series of highly competitive product layouts.
