The Chinese Master Painter Liu Youju on display at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose

on the occasion of the 60th Venice Art Biennale 2024

From 15 July to 15 August 2024Palazzo Donà dalle RoseFondamenta Nove, 5038, 30121, Venice

As part of the 60th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2024, entitled "Stranieri Ovunque / Foreigners Everywhere", at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose, located inFondamenta Nove, 5038, in the historic Cannaregio district in the heart of Venice, from July 15 to August 15, 2024, the solo exhibition of the internationally renowned artist Liu Youju will be held, entitled "Starting from the Metapoint", curated by Anna Balzani.Liu Youju officially participates in the 60th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2024 with the work "Mars Program" in the National Pavilion of the Republic of Cameroon, on display and visible to the public of the Biennale since April 17th. After the anthological exhibition held in 2021 in the exhibition hall of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, the Chinese Master painter, originally from Guangzhou, returns to Italy with a solo exhibition promoted by the Donà dalle Rose Foundation as part of the cultural events organized for the aforementioned Pavilion Nazionale.La Venice Biennale Arte is a privileged observatory on the state of the world through the transformation and evolution of the Arts, It is a unique place, different from any other, for the confrontation between artists and the analysis of the changes that are taking place in society. The artists, spokesmen of geographically distant cultures and undeniable historical-artistic differences, traveling from one place to another, moving through cities and continents, are themselves Foreigners and their work is the result of research, dialogue with the Other and the inevitable contaminations that follow. And this is also true for Liu Youju, whose works converge artistic, aesthetic and philosophical elements that can be traced back to both Eastern and Western art; his numerous exhibitions, held at The Richard Nixon Library & Museum in the United States of America, the British Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Academy of the Arts of Design and the Museum of Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, have contributed to arousing the interest of the international public.

On display in the Doges' Gallery, at Palazzo Donà dalle Rose, a selection of 20 paintings with which the artist explores the relationship between human beings and the intimate connection with Nature, questioning us, pushing us to rummage in our unconscious, looking at ourselves reflected in a mirror, to discover an elsewhere. Majestic trees, steep mountains, blue lakes, natural and interior landscapes, mysterious silhouettes and faces follow one another, imprinted on rice paper and canvas, made with Chinese ink (China) and acrylic paints. The rhythm of the compositions is changeable, at times thunderous, pervasive, pressing, swirling, melodious and poetic; and it is precisely the rhythm of the pictorial gesture that helps to emphasize the artist's completed chromatic research where we are enveloped by explosive, overwhelming, full-bodied, languid colors, full of light and creative energy; it is the force of Nature and its elements that deeply resonate with our emotions.

Surrounded by the suspended atmosphere of the seventeenth-century palace, by the illustrious characters who have determined the history of the Donà dalle Rose family and who dominate the portrait gallery, we see, in Liu Youju's canvases, enigmatic figures that observe us. They are not clear figures, but they are immediately perceptible, not intent on performing an action, if anything they have questioning looks and seem to urge us to start a dialogue with them. With its more than four hundred years of history, the refinement of the decorations, the magnificent and imposing perspective of the Gallery, the ancient wooden beams and the evocative view of the water – a symbol of life and of the city of Venice – Palazzo Donà dalle Rose becomes the setting for an introspective journey of consciousness in which the real world, floating, merges with the imaginative one. The light of the exhibition space also contributes to enhancing the colour, an authentic hallmark of the artist." The works on display, the rarefied landscapes, the naturalistic elements and the mysterious characters depicted, the bursting and vibrant colors – says the curator Anna Balzani – dialogue with the historical environments of the Palace, with the fascinating succession of portraits of the Doge's Gallery of the Donà dalle Rose family, creating an intimate and poetic path that seems to want to lead the visitor by the hand along an introspective journey, accomplished through the encounter with the Other, in the confluence of apparently distant worlds where mythological memories and the desire for the future converge, with the purpose of a new beginning, a common starting point". Liu Youju's work originates from traditional Chinese art, especially calligraphy, but at the same time there are traceable Western suggestions, from Impressionism to Abstractionism, up to a personal style, Illusionism, as defined by the artist himself, the result of comparison and contamination with other artistic experiences. Some canvases, characterized by strong expressiveness, search for harmony and an aura of mystery, are intended to express a feeling of indignation for the offenses caused to Nature. In "Man and Nature", "The Red Gene", "A Red Cassock" the anthropomorphic element is not only suggested by the title but immediately perceived by our gaze, becoming its point of reference. The artist conducts a reflection on existence, on the inconstant emotions of human beings, on the daily relationship with the Other, with the world, with one's own past, with conditioning cultural archetypes, the deepest fears and what has determined them. In "PenglaiFairy Pavilion" there are elements that can be traced back to Chinese mythology, to Mount Penglai, a mystical terrastics where it is said that the Eight Immortals lived, where there were no pains and winters, where glasses of wine never ran out and magical fruits were able to heal all ills and confer eternal youth; "Music From Tang Dynasty" recalls the era of Chinese history that saw the Tang Dynasty (618-907) as the protagonist during which, for 289 years of reign, art reached very high levels in painting and sculpture. There are moments in which reflection and research are shared with the public and constitute an opportunity to question ourselves on contemporaneity, on the importance of dialogue, on the essential dialectical relationship between human beings and Nature, on the relevance of art and on the role it also plays in the social sphere. This intent can be found in the works "Dialogue", "Stand Upright", "Morning Rhyme", "Sunrise", "Colorful Jungle". After the exhibition completed in 2021 in the exhibition hall of the Institut d'Art et de l'Art in Florence, the master Chinese painter, from Guangzhou, who is in Italy, organized a solo exhibition by the Donà dalla Rose Foundation in the aforementioned official pavilion.

The Venice Art Biennale is a special observatory that observes the state of the world through the transformation and evolution of art. It's a unique place. Different, comparisons between artists and analysis of the changes that are taking place in society. Artists, spokesmen of geographically distant cultures and undeniable historical and artistic differences, from place to place, across cities and continents, are mostly foreigners, and their artistic achievements are the result of their own efforts. Conversations with others and the inevitable impregnation that comes with it. The same is true of Liu Youju, whose works contain artistic elements, aesthetics and philosophy that can be traced back to both Eastern and Western art; With his numerous exhibitions, the Richard Nixon Library in the United States and the British Museum in London, the Louvre Museum of Decorative Arts and the Centre Pompidou, the School of Design and the Medici Ricardi Palace Museum in Florence, his art has aroused the interest of the international community.

A selection of 20 paintings on display at the Palais de la Rosary, through which the artist deepens the relationship between human beings and the intimate connection with nature, allowing us to enter the subconscious, look at ourselves in the mirror and discover elsewhere. Majestic trees, walking towards the mountains, blue lakes, natural and interior landscapes, mysterious shapes and faces follow one another, printed on rice paper and canvas, made with Chinese ink and acrylic paint. The rhythm of the composition is changeable, at times, it is distant, pervasive, passionate, swirling, rhythmic and poetic; It is the rhythm of the pictorial gestures that helps to emphasize the color research done by the artist, and we are captivated by his explosive colors, heartbreaking! His work is full of light and creative energy; It is the power of nature and its elements that resonate deeply with our emotions.

Liu's works are surrounded by the atmosphere of a 17th-century palace and have a modern aristocratic temperament.

From those famous figures who decided the history of the Donà da Rose family, they sit in the portrait gallery and let us see, in the paintings of Liu Youju, mysterious figures gaze at us. It's not a clear figure, they can detect it right away. Don't try to take any action, they seem to have questioning glances that seem to urge us to start a conversation with them. Penetrating over more than four hundred years of history, the refinement of the decorations, the grandeur and spectacular foreground of the galleries, the ancient wooden beams and the enchanting water features – the symbol of Venetian life and the city – the Palazzo Donà dalla Rose becomes the stage for a journey

It is an introspective form of consciousness in which the real world fluctuates, merging with the imagined world. The light in the exhibition space also helps to enhance the colors, which are the true hallmark of the artist. The works on display, the rare landscapes, naturalistic elements and the mysterious figures depicted, the blooming and vivid colors, the dialogue with the historical environment of the palace, and the charming portraits of the Doge Gallery of the Donà dalle Rose family, create an intimate and poetic path that seems to want to take the visitor by the hand on an introspective journey, through encounters with the other, at the intersection of seemingly distant worlds, where mythological memories and longings for the future come together with the aim of a new beginning, a common starting point“。 Liu Youju's work derives from traditional Chinese art, especially calligraphy, but at the same time there are traceable Western suggestions, from impressionism to abstraction, to fusion into a personal style, hallucinationism, as the artist himself defined, the result of comparisons and contamination with other artistic experiences. Some of the canvases are characterized by a strong expressiveness, a quest for harmony and an aura of mystery designed to express indignation at the offense caused by nature. In Man and Nature, Red Gene, and Red Robe, the anthropomorphic element is not only implied by the title, but is immediately perceived by our gaze as its reference point. The artist guides reflections on existence, on the precarious emotions of human beings, in everyday relationships with others, with the world, with one's own past, with conditioning cultural archetypes, with the deepest fears, and with the factors that determine them. In "Penglai Immortal Pavilion", elements that can be traced back to Chinese mythology appear, Penglai Mountain, a mysterious place where the legend of the Eight Immortals live, there is no bitter winter, the wine cup never runs out, and the magical fruit can cure all diseases and give eternal youth; "Music of the Tang Dynasty" looks back at the era of Chinese history with the Tang Dynasty (618-907) as the protagonists, and during the 289-year reign the art reached a very high level in the field of painting and sculpture. At certain moments, the reflections and studies carried out are shared with the public and constitute an opportunity to question contemporaneity, the importance of dialogue and the essential relationship

The dialectic between man and nature about the current events of art and its role in the social sphere. This intention can be traced back to "Stand Straight", "Morning Rhyme", "Sunrise" and "Colorful Jungle" in the works of "Dialogue". The Rose Palace Donna Gallery Dog Foundation IX, 503830121 Venice www.fondazionedonadallerose.org exhibition will be open until August 15, 2024 at the following times: Tuesday to Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
