3XN GXN Studio, in collaboration with SIAPLAN and MDA, won an international invitation competition for a new art center in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. The design not only blends a global design perspective with local knowledge and experience, but is also expected to be a destination for creative expression and a key component of Chungnam's art district.

Drawing inspiration from dynamic movements, the design team wanted to showcase the vibrancy, layering, and expressiveness of artworks through the art center. The design concept of the entire structure originates from the wave of the baton and the trajectory of the dancer's toes, reflecting the intangible expression and dynamic beauty of art. In addition, the design and function of the art center are closely linked, balanced by rational concepts and expressive forms.

The art center's roof is subtly curved in response to the height and massing of the interior spaces, while the façade is clad in fluted scale-like wood veneer to create an entrance and seating area, enhancing the building's interactive and open nature. The lobby space is spacious and bright, with a visual view of the garden and plaza outside, enhancing the continuity and openness of the space.

Warm wood and modern metal materials are used in the interior spaces to create an interior that is both comfortable and contemporary. Special attention has been paid to the design of the hall and auditoriums to ensure that each performance offers the best possible viewing experience. In addition, the interior space is flexible and can be quickly changed and adjusted to meet the needs of different types of performances and events.

The art center is designed to be in harmony with the surrounding natural environment, especially with the Yongfeng Mountains behind and the surrounding hiking trails. The positioning of the building rotates to better form visual and physical connections with other buildings and natural landscapes. In addition, the design emphasizes that there are no obvious "front" or "back" faces, providing a beautiful view of the landscape from any angle.

Chungnam Art Center's sustainability strategy is holistic and truly integrated into the building's design, aiming to bring value and optimize performance for people and the planet. Design strategies include biodiversity, human well-being and comfort, and strong and long-lasting design. Photovoltaic panels are integrated into the roof, which also collects rainwater, further enhancing the building's eco-friendly features.
