It is worth noting that this year's MEMS TOP 30 list has changed drastically, reflecting the current drastic changes and intensified competition in the global MEMS market.

The global MEMS market will reach 145.4 billion yuan in 2029, with a compound growth rate of 5% in the next five years.

Today, MEMS devices have become an indispensable part of daily life, embedded in various systems such as smartphones, automobiles, and fighter jets, such as MEMS silicon microphones in mobile phones and airbag detection sensors in automobiles. Due to the diversified application of MEMS devices, the global MEMS market has grown rapidly for many years, and its volume and related revenue are considerable.

In 2023, the global economic environment continues to be sluggish, many industries have experienced recession and high inventories, and 2023 is also a difficult year for the global MEMS industry.

According to Yole report data, the global MEMS market share in 2023 will be about 14.6 billion US dollars (about 106.1 billion yuan), a decrease of 14.6 million US dollars (about 106 million yuan) from 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 3%, mainly due to consumer electronics and the downturn in the economic cycle.

Some major trends are taking place in the end market, including the sensingization of consumer electronics, autonomous driving, the rise of smart cockpits, Industry 4.0, and artificial intelligence, and these trends are expected to grow over the long term, resulting in a significant demand for MEMS devices.

In order to sustain the growth of the MEMS industry, MEMS needs to be optimized in terms of efficiency, form factor, cost, robustness, and intelligence – and almost all MEMS companies are engaged in R&D in this direction.

Yole Group expects the global MEMS market to grow again in 2024, with shipments of about 34 billion units in 2024 (up 9% year-on-year) and revenue of US$15.6 billion (about 113.4 billion yuan).

The global MEMS market is expected to return to a steady pace by 2025, paving the way for renewed growth and stability of the MEMS market, which is expected to register a CAGR of 5% from 2023 to 2029. The MEMS market is expected to reach US$20 billion (about 145.4 billion yuan) in 2029, and shipments will reach nearly 43 billion units by 2029.

145.4 billion yuan! The latest TOP 30 global MEMS manufacturers rankings are announced, and these 5 Chinese companies have entered!

In terms of segmentation, the consumer market remains the largest market for MEMS, with a market of $7.7 billion in 2023 and will grow to $9.8 billion by 2029, with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4%. The MEMS communications market (Telecom) is the fastest-growing market with a 5-year CAGR of 21% and will grow from $200 million in 2023 to $500 million in 2029.

The automotive market grew at a five-year compound annual growth rate of 7%, from $2.8 billion to $4.2 billion. The MEMS industry market grew from $2.6 billion to $3.6 billion at a 5-year CAGR of 5%.

Therefore, from the perspective of market growth rate, the markets with the fastest growth rate of global MEMS in the next five years are: communication (21%), defense and aviation (8%), automotive (7%), industrial (5%), consumer (4%), and medical (3%).

145.4 billion yuan! The latest TOP 30 global MEMS manufacturers rankings are announced, and these 5 Chinese companies have entered!

There are only 90,000 MEMS wafers in Chinese mainland! Can Chinese MEMS companies absorb local production? Looking forward to more Chinese companies going bankrupt or cessating MEMS activities?

In recent years, China has attached great importance to the development of the smart sensor industry, and has built MEMS production lines in many places, and from a global perspective, the output of MEMS wafers is also rising.

Yole Group estimates that the global MEMS industry processed nearly 4 million wafers in 2023 and is expected to grow to 5 million wafers by 2029.

Of these, about 60% of MEMS wafers are produced in Western countries (North America and Europe), about 19% in Japan, and the rest in Greater China and Southeast Asia (Malaysia and Singapore). At the same time, the report believes that although global semiconductor manufacturing, including MEMS, has a trend of returning to Western countries, Chinese mainland is expected to increase its MEMS manufacturing share in the next few years.

Specifically, in 2023, about 1.1 million MEMS wafers will be produced in North America and Europe, about 750,000 MEMS wafers will be produced in Japan, 520,000 MEMS wafers will be produced in Malaysia and Singapore, 260,000 MEMS wafers will be produced in Taiwan, and 90,000 MEMS wafers will be produced in Chinese mainland.

It can be seen that compared with the huge MEMS demand in Chinese mainland, the number of local MEMS wafer production is still small, only about 90,000 pieces - so in recent years, China has built a number of MEMS production lines and is committed to increasing local MEMS wafer production.

However, China's MEMS market is currently dominated by international brands, and many international MEMS giants already have their own MEMS factories or solid overseas foundries, and it remains to be seen whether Chinese MEMS companies will be able to absorb local MEMS wafer production.

Yole Group also mentioned that the growing number of MEMS companies and foundries has created a massive oversupply locally and is killing the profit margins of most players today. If demand doesn't pick up quickly, should we expect more Chinese companies to go bankrupt or stop MEMS activity? Or will this lead to greater integration of the Chinese ecosystem? How many of these companies will receive the financial support they need to survive?

It can also be seen that the participation of Chinese enterprises in the global MEMS industry competition has intensified the competitive pressure of the global MEMS market.

Bosch and Broadcom have been ranked as the top 2 MEMS in the world, and their revenues have declined! 5 Chinese MEMS companies have entered the top 30 in the world! Sai Microelectronics continues to be the No. 1 MEMS foundry in the world!

2023 has been a difficult year for MEMS participants. The consumer downturn has impacted demand for end systems, and high inventory levels in the supply chain have created supply imbalances and the automotive end market has declined. In addition, customer-level inventories are forcing sensor manufacturers to reduce production levels and reduce foundry utilization, thereby reducing sales.

Bosch, STMicroelectronics, and TDK continue to lead the MEMS sensor market, while Broadcom and Qorvo lead the RF MEMS market. Bosch and Broadcom are still ranked in the top 2 of the world's top 30 MEMS, but their revenues will decline in 2023. The third and fourth places – TDK and Qorvo – showed steady growth compared to the previous year. Broadcom lost a significant portion of orders in Apple's FBAR business, resulting in a more slump in revenue, while Qorvo boosted revenue with its BAW SMR filter business.

It is worth mentioning that in recent years, TDK has increased its investment in the MEMS sensor business through the acquisition of Invensense, Tronics and other companies, and has achieved results, and in 2023, TDK will enter the top three global MEMS for the first time, second only to Bosch and Broadcom.

It is worth noting that this year's MEMS TOP 30 list has changed drastically, reflecting the current drastic changes and intensified competition in the global MEMS market.

For example, TDK entered the global TOP3 for the first time, while Qualcomm, the world's third place in the previous year, fell 16 places to rank 19th, in addition, HP, Canon, Epson and other MEMS printer printhead companies have improved significantly, which reflects the drastic changes in the current global MEMS market.

The MEMS foundry business was also relatively flat last year, down 1% year-on-year. Most sensor manufacturers have reduced their orders due to declining demand for top/end-system level sensors, or excessively high channel inventory levels. However, this decline is offset by the continued growth of players entering the MEMS industry with new designs and technologies across the globe.

From the perspective of the TOP 30 list, Silex Microsystems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sai Microelectronics, ranks 27th, surpassing Teledyne MEMS (ranked 29th) and TSMC (ranked 30th), and continues to be the first place in the global MEMS wafer foundry.

In terms of Chinese MEMS companies, Goermicro ranks 11th, which is the highest-ranked Chinese MEMS company, in addition, AAC Technologies (AAC, 26) and Hikmicro (28) are also in the top 30.

Therefore, at present, five Chinese companies, including Goertek, AAC Technologies, Silex, Hikvision Microelectronics, and TSMC, have entered the top 30 of global MEMS.
