Only three Chinese athletes have been shortlisted for this authoritative international ranking: table tennis team Fan Zhendong and Sun Yingsha, and swimming team Qin Haiyang. Unfortunately, none of the three Chinese players made it to the top 10, and they were all ranked behind the 20th.
The International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS) has announced its 2023 Best Athlete Poll, with 73 athletes from around the world on the list.
American gymnastics star Simon Biles and Serbian world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic have been named AIPS Athlete of the Year.
There were 31 best female athletes in AIPS2023, and Sun Yingsha, the world No. 1 in table tennis women's singles, was the only one in China, ranking 21st with 53 votes.

There are thousands of athletes around the world, and only 73 of them can be selected for this list. Being able to make the list represents its extraordinary international influence. Sun Yingsha, Fan Zhendong, and Qin Haiyang have won glory for the country, which is gratifying.
Simon Biles, the world's most decorated female gymnast from Columbus, Ohio, had an unforgettable 2023 as she took first place among female athletes with 353 votes.
Kenyan middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon finished second with 329 votes, while footballer Bonmati Aitana was third with 297 votes.
