On May 6, according to Thai media news, the city of Bangkok, Thailand, is committed to reducing and preventing sidewalk safety accidents, because data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that there are an average of 2,490 pedestrian safety accidents per year across Thailand, and 915 per year in Bangkok alone (only reported accidents).
According to the data, the most important cause of the above accidents is non-compliance with traffic rules, such as driving a vehicle on the sidewalk and injuring a pedestrian. The act is considered to be an offence of careless driving causing bodily or mental harm to another person, and is punishable by imprisonment for up to 1 month or a fine of not more than 10,000 baht, or both, under Sections 43(4) and 157 of the Land Transport Act 1979 and Section 390 of the Penal Code.
In this regard, in addition to the strict punishment of criminal acts in accordance with the law. The Bangkok Municipality will also implement a sidewalk improvement program as it is the most common urban issue complained about, including lowering the height of the sidewalk, using reinforced concrete to build the sidewalk to increase the load-bearing capacity, adjusting the entrance and exit of the building to match the height of the sidewalk, adjusting the slope according to international standards, etc.
